PRODUCTS TECHNOLOGY FILE SAFE PRESSING MADE EASIER
With the SafeDESIGNER library for press applications, B&R is one of the first manufacturers to offer a complete set of the function blocks specified in PLCopen part 4. As a result, users working with safety-critical press applications will have a
much easier time setting up the necessary safety functions Over the past several years, PLCopen has worked intensively on
a specification for function blocks in press applications, with B&R playing an instrumental role in this development. The result is part 4 of the PLCopen safety specification, which defines safety aspects of mechanical, electrical and hydraulic presses. Also defined in this specification were the corresponding vendor- independent function blocks for the safety application. PLCopen specifications provide solutions for machine builders
that are open to all, not just a few manufacturers. The PLCopen Safety working group brings together engineers from leading industrial automation companies as well as experts from certifying institutions who work closely with safety-related technology. For many years now, B&R has been involved in this consortium.

BOOSTING ADOPTION OF COMPRESSOR ENERGY RECOVERY
Atlas Copco is aiming to increase the adoption of compressor energy recovery with the launch of an all-in- one kit that
simplifies integration with a building’s central heating and hot water system. The Thermo Kit is a package of energy recovery components that can be installed easily to provide the user with a highly efficient source of supplementary hot water at no additional cost. Thermo Kit has been developed to overcome the installation challenges that have hampered widespread uptake of compressed air energy recovery. It enables users to convert excess heat from a compressor that is fitted with an energy recovery (ER) unit into hot water, which is stored in a buffer vessel connected to a
typical domestic or office central heating system. Using this system, a typical Atlas Copco GA45+ compressor could achieve significant savings on a user’s annual gas bill, for example. As much as 94 percent of the
electrical energy used by an industrial air compressor is converted into heat and lost through radiation in the compression process. Therefore, a properly designed heat recovery unit can recover from 50 to 94 percent of this available thermal energy as low-grade heat, which can be used to heat water. Thermo Kit is intended to be as simple
to install as a system of solar panels. Only a limited amount of engineering work is required and installation is usually swift and seamless.

SIMPLIFIED DEPLOYMENT FOR SAFETY INSTRUMENTED SYSTEMS KEEP ENERGY
Rockwell Automation has introduced its new OptiSIS solution, giving industrial operators a pre-engineered safety instrumented system that can help ease
deployment and reduce lead times for small and midsized process applications. The OptiSIS solution is suitable for oil and gas, chemical and petrochemical producers with aging process-safety systems that are either noncompliant or can no longer be maintained. The OptiSIS solution is designed for safety
instrumented system applications of 50 or 100 I/O points, including emergency shutdown (ESD) systems, burner-management systems (BMS) and high-integrity pressure protection systems (HIPPS). The version for applications of up to 100 I/O points will be available in the fourth quarter of 2015.
The pre-engineered OptiSIS solution is delivered ready to install, wire and configure, shortening the overall engineering time and eliminating the need for any programming. Users need only enter their logic scenarios into the system’s cause-and-effect graphical interface. The configurations are tested and can then be stored for verification against original safety function requirements. Flexible inputs and outputs help confirm that the
system accommodates a varying mix of digital and analog I/O types. Additionally, simplex I/O and fault-tolerant (dual) I/O versions are available. The system meets requirements up to Safety
Integrity Level 3 (SIL 3) and is compliant with IEC 61511/ISA 84.00.01. It uses ready-to-install, TUV- certified hardware and validated application software.

RELIABLE TEMPERATURE CONTROL ON A BUDGET
West Control Solutions has launched MAXVU – a compact controller that offers fast set-up because its start-up configuration menu only shows the most vital parameters, including sensor types, units, outputs, alarms and setpoint values, removing time spent scrolling through unecessary options. MAXVU is particularly suited for packaging tray and bag sealers, textiles applications (such as seam sealing and thermal bonding) and processes in the food and beverage sector including fryers, micro- breweries and chocolate tempering. MAXVU’s ease-of-use is supported by its large display. The button design on the 1/16 DIN product, with the buttons at left and right of the digits on the keypad, allows for an 18mm upper digit and 10.2mm lower digit height in a 48mm high device. The larger digits offer increased clarity and visibility from distance to view vital process information and alarm messages that help monitor a system is running effectively. A 96x48mm unit is also available with 18mm digits upper and lower. With a 67mm depth, the compactness of the device also aids installation. Users with compact machines will find
that the improved access to the large rear terminals makes the MAXVU unit easier to wire. Additionally, MAXVU includes a side configuration port allowing users to connect to a graphic or the wizard-driven, user-friendly PC configuration software to further simplify set-up, and save the configuration to programme additional units.

CHAINS ON TRACK igus has introduced magsnap – a new magnetic adapter that holds a plastic energy chain run onto a metallic surface, preventing it from swinging back and forth or moving out of its axis of motion. Eliminating the need for installing a complete guide trough system, magsnap is a cost-effective and lightweight alternative that also reduces assembly time by easily clipping onto the crossbars of existing energy chains. Typical applications include materials handling and cranes with hanging energy chains. In addition to materials handling and crane applications, the new magsnap can be used in various hanging applications, ranging from elevators to fully automatic parking garages. The magsnap is also suitable for rotary applications, where the chain moves within an enclosure – this is also known as an RBR or Reverse Bend Radius application. Here, the magnetic clips ensure that the chain is held onto the enclosure on the outer radius, ensuring smooth running of the energy chain in a simpler guide structure.
