SENSORS & INSTRUMENTATION 2015 – THE UK’S ONLY NATIONAL SENSORS EVENT

T

he Internet of Things,

Industry 4.0, big data and the smart factory are all buzzwords of the moment in our industry. Smart devices and the Internet have changed all our lives and now they are about to make a big impact on the manufacturing industry, with factory automation one of the areas that’s likely to be affected most. In theory, as devices become

more intelligent, integrated and interconnected the boundaries of the traditional factory will get pushed aside. The manufacturing process will become more efficient, with data analysis and predictive maintenance improving overall equipment effectiveness, increasing efficiency, reducing costs and raising output. This is of course a utopian ideal

of what the future of manufacturing holds and it’s one that the industry should be aiming for, but in all honesty it’s going to take quite a while before this becomes a reality for many companies, particularly SMEs. However, it’s important to know what is available and what the cost of implementation really is, which is what we aim to help you with each month in Automation.

eflecting the worldwide use of intelligent and connected sensors in an ever-growing number of

industries and applications, the Sensors & Instrumentation exhibition has a new logo and branding for 2015. Taking place at the NEC Birmingham on Wednesday 30th September and Thursday 1st October, this year's event promises to be even bigger and better than previous shows. Now in its sixth year, and firmly established as the

UK’s only national sensors event, Sensors & Instrumentation 2015 has a number of new elements added which will further expand and develop this key industry trade show. Highlights include an exhibition of the latest products and technology from over 100 market-leading suppliers. This will provide visitors with the chance to speak to knowledgeable members of staff about the latest developments and applications, and to see new products and well-established ranges - all in the one venue. The popular seminar programme will once again take place over the two days of the show and will include presentations from leading suppliers in the test, measurement and control industry, including National Instruments, HBM, Sensirion and DJB Instruments. This will be backed up by a new series of

high-level keynote and case study led conference sessions taking place in a dedicated theatre within the show. Confirmed conference speakers will be representing leading organisations including Cambridge Consultants, Morgan Advanced Materials, General Dynamics, SICK and Sensor Technology. Another exciting new additio n for 2015 is the

‘Innovation Showcase’. This special display area within the show floor will provide the perfect opportunity for exhibitors, conference presenters and industry leading companies to demonstrate their latest products and innovations. It will be a focal point for the industry to demonstrate the latest developments taking place within this technology driven and growing sector. The Innovation Showcase will be located in a prime position at the front of the show and is expected to be an extremely popular feature. Taking place once again in Hall 3 of the NEC

Birmingham, Sensors & Instrumentation will be co- located with The Machine Building Show, Micro Nano MEMS, TCT, and the PPMA Show making the event an even more worthwhile visit. Pre-registered visitors will also benefit from free parking (when staying after 3pm) and free Wi-Fi access. Further details about the show, including information about the conference and seminar programmes and how to register for your free entry badge, can be found online at www.sensorsandinstrumentation.co.uk

UK MANUFACTURING EXECS FORESEE INNOVATION LED FUTURE

UK manufacturing executives say that their strategic focus going forward is one that is innovation led, supported by attractive UK corporation taxes like the Patent Box, according to the latest KPMG Global Manufacturing Outlook. The report found that nearly half

(48 per cent) of UK manufacturers said that their company’s strategic focus is on innovation and that only two per cent felt that UK taxes are a challenge to their business in the next 12 – 24 months. The survey found that encouragingly, half of the UK

respondents said that they plan to spend more than six percent of revenue on research and development and innovation over the next two years, an increase of 21 per cent from what they spent in the past two years. www.kpmg.co.uk
