CEVA hosts inter-regional boys’ power tournament

Columbia Empire Volleyball Associa- tion, with the assistance of USA Volleyball, hosted its fi rst-ever inter-regional tournament on Feb. 21 with teams from Puget Sound, Evergreen and Intermountain regions.

The stage was set at Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham, Oregon, with four courts and plenty of room for spectators. MHCC coach Andrew Clifton, who was the

site director, said “I would love to have a men’s team here, but we need to establish a strong juniors program fi rst. I was delighted to help get boys volleyball off the ground.” CEVA Boys’ Committee Chair Marc Wade (YVBA) invited all 85 clubs to host a boys’ team at the CEVA Club Directors Meeting last fall. Eight clubs offered to host at least one team: ABC Apollo, Aces, Adidas NW, Ajax, CCVC, Excel NW, Salem and YVBA. In November, the region teamed with

Tyler Fenton (Idaho Strike), Rey Javier (South Sound), Mark West (Space Needle) and Roland Madany (Spokane) to create an inter-regional monthly tournament. To kick off the season, CEVA hosted an inaugural draft on Dec. 6, 2014, at the Courts in Beaverton, Oregon, inviting boys to try out for the eight clubs. Over 100 boys registered for the draft and every boy had at least one “offer” by the end of the evening. In January, CEVA hosted a friendship tournament to make sure boys were acquaint- ed with second referee duties, score keeping and line judging before hitting the road. South Sound won the Feb. 21 event by

defeating Adidas NW 25-20, 25-18 in the fi nal. Other teams competing included: ABC Apollo 16-1, ABC Apollo 18-1, Aces 15-1, Adidas NW 18-1, Ajax 18-1, CCVC 18-1, Excel NW 18-1, Salem 18-1 and YVBA 16-1 from CEVA. Other teams from the neighbor- ing regions included Space Needle 18-1, Spokane 16-1, Spokane 18-1, Idaho Strike 16-1 and Idaho Strike 18-1.

Ajax coach Ben Stern said “watching the

growth in interest and skill level is similar to what Northern California went through 10-15 years ago. Everyone is hoping that with a rise in interest, we will soon be able to market the boys’ game to all ages, starting with 12-and- under. With quality coaching at the regional level, we all want to see the same goal as our female student-athletes; to play skills-based volleyball at the highest level possible.” Wade, who also serves as YVBA coach, was excited. “Just like the trend in the North- east and Midwest, boys’ volleyball in the Pacifi c Northwest is experiencing tremendous growth. Although we have a long way to go before we catch up to traditional power- house regions like California and Hawaii, Saturday’s event clearly shows that more and more, top-level athletes are choosing vol- leyball as their sport of choice and sticking with it.”
