t’s early afternoon on a warm winter morning in Santa Monica, Calif. Olympic hopefuls John Hyden, 42, and Tri Bourne, 25, have just fi nished the day’s training and are sitting, still sandy, at a coastal cafe, answering questions about their beach partnership.


Given their age gap, this alliance has had almost a father-son feel since they fi rst teamed up in early 2013. Bourne, a native of Aiea, Hawaii, and former indoor standout at the University of Southern California, soaks up all he can from Hyden, who played for

the U.S. in two indoor Olympics (1996 and 2000) after graduating from San Diego State. After transitioning to the beach, Hyden has won 24 tournaments in a pro beach career that began in 2001. On this day, Bourne and Hyden are talk- ing about why their partnership works – last year, they won an FIVB tournament (Ger- many) and an AVP tournament (Milwaukee) – and offering a few training and lifestyle tips. They’re well positioned to compete for one of the two U.S. berths in the 2016 Olym- pic Games in Rio after an impressive run
