U.S. National Team’s Karch Kiraly heads list of honorees at 70th annual Boyce Banquet


.S. Women’s National Team coach Karch Kiraly and long-time UC Santa Barbara women’s volleyball coach Kathy Gregory will be honored for their playing prowess on the beach at the 70th Annual Dorothy C. Boyce Banquet and Reception on May 20 at the Detroit Marriott at the Renais- sance Center.

recipients of the All-Time Great Male Beach Player and All- Time Great Beach Female Beach Player honor as part of USA Volleyball’s corporate awards program. The Boyce Banquet is the signature event during the USA Volleyball Annual Meetings.The individual honorees represent a wide array of categories within USA Volleyball’s award structure. The banquet will also recognize Lora Webster, who will receive the inaugural All-Time Great Female Sitting Player. Webster has been a world pioneer in the sport of sitting vol- leyball and has won a medal in each of the three Paralympic Games that women’s sitting volleyball has been contested. Kiraly, who won a record 148 beach opens (including the 1996 Olympic beach volleyball gold medal) and more than $3 million in prize money, learned the sand game on Santa Barbara’s East Beach. Those were the same courts where Gregory, who was also the head women’s coach at UC Santa Barbara for more than three decades, trained for much of her 30 seasons. She won 50 open tournaments from 1968 to 1990.

20 seasons. Charlie Sullivan will be honored with the Donald Shondell All-Time Great Coach Award. He has led the Springfi eld College men’s volleyball program to the fi rst three NCAA Division III Men’s Volleyball Championships. Marcia Alterman, the executive director of PAVO since 1996, will be honored with the 2015 Wilbur H. Peck Referee Emeritus Award. Three individuals will receive the George J. Fisher Leader in Vol-


Gregory also had a beach playing career that spanned three decades with all 50 of her victories coming in the state of California. She previously has been inducted into both the Volleyball Hall of Fame (1989) and the California Beach Volleyball Hall of Fame (1992). Duncan McFarland will receive the 2015 Tom Haine All-Time Great


Male Player Award, while Tara Cross-Battle will be honored with the Flo Hyman All-Time Great Female Player. McFarland was a member of the U.S. Men’s National Team from 1969 to 1975 and earned All-American honors several years while playing in USA Volleyball National Champion- ship events. Cross-Battle was the fi rst volleyball player in U.S. history to compete in four Olympic Games.


Carol Dewey will be honored with the Bertha Lucas All-Time Great Coach Award. She coached Purdue University to 469 career victories for


leyball Award. Kathy DeBoer has served as the executive director of the AVCA since 2006 after a successful coaching career. Jeff Hoppen, who also will receive the Nancy S. Sharpless Scorekeeper Emeritus Award, has devoted 30-plus years to be- ing a scorer and mentoring young offi cials. Terry Lawton has spent 35 years offi ciating and holding numerous leadership positions at the national and regional levels, along with working at two Olym- pic Games.


Boyce Banquet


Cost to attend the banquet and reception is $50 per person or $450 for a table of 10.The Dr. Harold T. Friermood “Frier” Award, the top honor given out by USA Volleyball, is not revealed until announced during the Boyce Banquet.
