ORDER FORM £ 75835 THE QUR’AN:

A New Translation by Tarif Khalidi

A major new translation of the sacred text of Islam. Retaining the structure and rhythms of the original Aramaic, the author enlivens the ancient teachings and prophetic narratives which are central to the Muslim faith. Passed down in a series of revelations over many years to the Prophet Muhammad by

the Archangel Gabriel, these divine teachings provide the core Islamic values of prayer, pilgrimage and fasting, as well as spiritual guidance on marriage, family, crime, punishment, rituals, charity and warfare. In 114 chapters, or suras, readers gain a keen insight into 7th century Arabia. It is also interesting to encounter figures who occur in the Christian and Jewish religions, such as Adam, Moses, Jesus and John the Baptist who - like Muhammad - are regarded as prophets. 530 pages. $32.95 NOW £7

PSYCHOLOGY AND SOCIOLOGY

Some minds are like soup in a poor restaurant - better left unstirred.

- P. G. Wodehouse

76923 SCARCITY: Why Having Too Little Means So Much by Sendhil Mullainathan and Eldar Shafir

In this eye-opener of a volume, an economist and a psychologist have pooled their talents to explain, expand upon and show how you can come to terms with and benefit from one of the most commonplace and apparently contrary truths in modern living. They call it the science of

scarcity, a mindset which explains why the overweight cannot stop eating, insomniacs cannot sleep and the lonely fail to make friends. Why is the old saying “if you want something doing, ask a busy person” so true? Why does the top chef, after years of perfecting their craft, create their finest dish in a couple of rushed hours in somebody else’s kitchen? Why do those struggling to make ends meet find it so hard to escape debt, and why does the professional sportsman miss that penalty or fail to sink a ten-inch putt when the world is watching? When we do not have enough of something, be it time, money, willpower or desire, not only do we make the wrong choices but our minds become constricted as we tend to become consumed with what is preoccupying us and so devote less time to other parts of our life, those parts which could offer us an escape route from our problems. By understanding our difficulties and relating them to the underlying scarcity that is contributing to them we can not only improve our lives but also turn a lack of time or resources to our advantage. 288pp. £20 NOW £7

75886 ALL ABOUT LOVE: Anatomy of an

Unruly Emotion by Lisa Appignanesi Love shapes our lives and our culture, our dreams and fantasies and also literature, music and of course history and the fabric of society. In this bold and intimate meditation, Lisa Appignanesi draws together insights from history, literature, psychology, philosophy and popular culture to illuminate the turbulent yet irrepressible experience of love. Chapter headings include Twin Souls, Finding Mr Right, Victorian Marriage, Adulterous Passions, Mother-Love, Erotic Intruders, Father-Love, Grandparents, Female Friendship, Shaping Friendships and more. A meticulous cultural study which is sophisticated and full of striking subtext. US first edition, 403pp, illus. £20 NOW £4.50

76546 COMPELLING PEOPLE: The Hidden

Qualities That Make Us Influential by John Neffinger and Matthew Kohut Designed as a business book and now required reading at Harvard Business School, the book is about how people judge you, and how to come out looking good. It helps demystify the process we use to size each other up. The criteria that count are what we call ‘strength’ and ‘warmth’. Strength is a person’s capacity to make things happen with abilities and force of will. When people project strength, they command our respect. Warmth gives the sense that a person shares our feelings, interests, and view of the world. When people project warmth, we like and support them. So we warm to warm people but dislike cold ones. Everyone wants to know how to be more influential but magnetism or charisma may not come naturally. 315pp in paperback. £8.99 NOW £4.50

76883 SUFFRAGETTE

DERBY by Michael Tanner The Derby race of June 1913 is famous for the tragedy of Emily Wilding Davison, who threw herself in front of the King’s horse in the service of the Suffragette cause. Less well-known is the fact that the outcome of the race was viciously disputed, with the first past the post, Craiganour, eventually being disqualified after jockeys and owners ganged up against the

horse’s rider, Johnny Reiff, and the owner, Bower Ismay. American by birth, Reiff was unpopular among his fellow jockeys who thought the prize money should go an Englishman, while Ismay’s brother Bruce had controversially escaped from the sinking Titanic earlier in the year. To add to an explosive situation, the horse that came second, Aboyeur, was owned by Eustace Loder, who deeply resented the fact that Ismay had been conducting an affair with his sister-in-law Maggie. So the establishment joined forces with the jockey fraternity to call the result into question and an enquiry ensued in which Craiganour was disqualified, in spite of evidence suggesting other horses were also jostling. Trainer Jack Jarvis, seeing the way the wind was blowing, got in quickly with a bet that landed him a tidy sum. Meanwhile, Davison’s death, which the author describes as the result of “a chain of miscalculations and irrational impulses”, was hailed by the Suffragette sisterhood as the glorious martyrdom that would make their cause unstoppable. 364gpp, black and white photos. £20 NOW £6.50

76869 FUNNY SHAPED BALLS: The Biggest Book of

Sporting Jokes Ever by Jonathan Swan

David Beckham may be one of our greatest ever footballers, as well as a style icon, role model husband and father and all-round nice chap, so how is it fair that he and his wife get a whole 26 pages of ragging in the football section of this

monumental collection of sporting funnies? We’re sure he will get over it. Arranged by sport from All Aboard (sailing and rowing) to Yoga, there must be some 2,000 jokes here, and not just about the most popular sports and pastimes either, as hurling, cheerleading, American football, hiking, chess, snowboarding, surfing and volleyball are all included among the 47 chapter headings. As well as the funnies there are also some of the best terrace chants, limericks, wise words and “you know whens…” thrown in for good measure. “Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach him how to fish and he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day.” There is an absolutely scandalous four page slur upon Merseyside with the leaked IOC bid from Liverpool and some delightful football anagrams such as Queens Park Rangers (queer spankers rang) and Wolverhampton Wanderers (old woman perverts raw hen.) 313pp paperback.

77174 HARRY’S GAMES: Inside the Mind of Harry

Redknapp by John Crace Always controversial, Harry Redknapp has several times been the favourite for the top job of England Manager but never quite made it. In 2012 he was the favourite to succeed Fabio Capello but miscalculated his bid. As manager of Spurs, Redknapp had signed new blood and seen his team move steadily up the

League, but he was sacked that year when he went on the offensive in an interview with Sky Sports, claiming he deserved a new contract and higher pay. The chairman was not impressed, given that Spurs had narrowly missed the Champions’ League. His England prospects were further blighted in 2012 by a tax evasion scandal that came to court just as speculation was at fever pitch over Capello’s successor. Money has always been an grey area, but the rake-off from Rio Ferdinand’s £18 million transfer fee from West Ham to Leeds was found to be perfectly legal. There were allegations of corruption relating to his time at Portsmouth, and Redknapp saw off an initial charge but found himself in court again along with former chairman Milan Mandaric. Guardian columnist and Spurs fan John Crace follows every detail of his team’s successes and failures, and his love-hate attitude to Redknapp gives the book a personal angle. A lot of his material comes from talking to supporters, providing a shrewd and original assessment of the man who remains an enigma. 244pp, colour photos. £18.99 NOW £5
