76886 TYPE: FORM AND FUNCTION: A Handbook on the Fundamentals of Typography
by Jason Tselentis
The design of this beautiful book itself illustrates the supreme importance of the subject: typography is key in getting
your message across. The book’s Introduction starts with the 22 letters of the Phoenician alphabet at the dawn of civilisation. All writing was in capitals until lower-case letters were created under the Emperor Charlemagne, starting a movement which led eventually to our modern classic Roman typeface. Other modern typefaces, many of them without serifs such as the ubiquitous Arial, were influenced by the Bauhaus movement of the thirties that stressed functionality. Sanserif fonts such as News Gothic were popular products of this era, as was the swaggeringly Art Deco typeface Hobo, created by Morris Fuller Benton. Letter spacing is just as important as the font itself and the author covers the development of proportion and spacing as one of the fundamentals of type design. Graphic designers always start with the image and then move on to the font, and the process of creating a flyer or poster is described step-by-step, covering reading direction, focal point, columnar grid, typographic alignment and other essential considerations. A feature on readability includes the choice between italic and normal, and how to pair up typefaces. The final section on Experimentation is wild and wacky with some wonderfully creative designs that defy typographical conventions. 208pp, softback, superbly illustrated in colour, list of resources. A wonderful gift if you can bear to give it away.

TATTOO ART edited by Lal Hardy
Every brilliantly bright colour in the palette is used to produce these fantastically complex designs and they are real works of art. Tattoos have been found on mummies from as long ago as 3300 B.C. Changing attitudes can be attributed to the fall of the Iron Curtain, the rise of the internet, and reality shows, such as
London Ink. In the UK, Phil Kyle, Nikole Lowe, Louis Molloy - the creator of the famous Beckham angel - and Dan Gold have become household names. The quality of equipment, the wider range of pigments and hygiene procedures are at an all-time high, as is the quality of artistic workmanship. The pages of this lovely book are a showcase for some of the greatest tattooing. 448 paperback pages with over 700 tattoos in full colour by 80 of the world’s leading tattoo artists, with a list of their names, and photos of the artists. £10.99 NOW £5

All London attended his sparkling lectures and visited the unique museum that he established as a study collection. In addition to the extensive catalogue and appendices, this splendid volume presents a revised edition of the text of Hunter’s manuscript notes for his lectures to the Royal Academy as well as biographical essays by specialists on Glasgow, his native town, plus Hunter’s taste as an art collector, his collection as a whole, and his original museum in London. This collection is the only one formed by one of the founding members of the Royal Academy that survives today. 75262 THOMAS HOVENDEN: His Art and Life
by Anne Gregory Terhune et al The work of Thomas Hovenden (1840-95) specialised in narrative scenes of domestic rural life and, latterly, on the American Civil War. Born in County Cork, the potato famine claimed the lives of his parents when he was six, and he was placed in an orphanage in Cork where he was apprenticed to a cabinetmaker. His new master paid for him to attend the new Cork School of Design when he was 17. He crossed the Atlantic to New York to live with his brother and some 150,000 Cork emigrants who had fled the famine to New York. This was also the time of the Civil War and this plus the vexed issue of slavery would exert a powerful influence upon Hovenden. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux- Arts in Paris under Alexandre Cabanel, whereupon he returned to an astonishingly successful career as a painter and teacher at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts with Thomas Eakins and Thomas Anschutz. In his paintings black families could be going about their daily chores, reading the Bible or receiving a cordial visit from their ex-masters, or they could be fleeing for their lives. His immense (6’6"×5’3") oil on canvas “The Last Moments of John Brown” (1884) depicts the famous abolitionist stopping to kiss a black child on his way to the gallows in 1859. A total of 133 colour and b/w illus. Photos and daguerreotypes. 276pp, 9"×11½”. £32.49 NOW £9.50
74572 ROBERT ADAM: The Search for a Modern Classicism
by Richard John
In this polemical and beautifully illustrated book, Professor John examines the work of Robert
Adam, now director of the largest traditional architectural firm in Europe, ADAM Architecture. In the early 1970s, Adam was granted a scholarship at the British School in Rome and, although it was then unfashionable, turned to traditional design. In the 1980s, he became one of the spokesmen for the emerging body of traditional designers in the UK and abroad. He continued to draw from the entire classical tradition, spanning a time-scale from ancient Greece to the 1930s. From 2000 onwards, Adam was instrumental in the establishment of the Traditional Architecture Group, The International Network for Traditional Building, the Council for European Urbanism and the Academy of Urbanism, which have firmly established traditional architecture as part of the UK scene. He trusts that it will develop further as a major challenge to the orthodoxy of modernism. 28 x 28 x 2.5cm, 256 pages, colour photos, drawings and plans. £40 NOW £9
73952 THE FAMILY OF TOUCANS:
The Complete Plates by John Gould Simply gorgeous. Presented as 51 unbound, fine art prints in an enormous red linen clamshell case, this portfolio contains what is generally thought to be the most dramatic illustrations of John Gould (1804-1881), the only ornithological artist of the 19th century to rival John James Audubon in ambition and quality. The range of vivid colour in The Family of Toucans - shiny black, vibrant red, yellow, and orange - creates an unprecedented sense of animation; the birds seem to emerge from the page more like living creatures than two-dimensional representations. Each beautiful bird is anatomically correct and exquisitely rendered in colour, in a natural setting on a branch or under foliage, often in pairs. The plumage is dazzling and appealing and all nature lovers can appreciate the rarity of this collection. Taken from the revised and expanded edition published in London in 1854, the facsimile plates are individual prints ready for framing, 13" x 19", plus 31 page introduction. Slipcased. ONLY £50

75228 PICASSO AND MODERN BRITISH ART edited by James Beechey and Chris Stephens
Picasso’s enormous influence on British modernism is explored through seven of his British contemporaries, for whom he proved to be an important stimulus. They are Duncan Grant, Wyndham Lewis, Ben Nicholson, Henry Moore, Francis Bacon, Graham Sutherland and David Hockney. In the pre- and inter-war period, the work of Picasso could generally only be seen in small galleries and the houses of a select group of private collectors, by the post-war period he was permanently represented in the National Collections. So, too, were the modern artists who came under his influence. Readers will be fascinated to compare Hockney’s Christopher Without His Glasses and Picasso’s Portrait of Emilie Marguerite Walter, and Sutherland’s Composition: Devastation with Picasso’s Guernica. 240 paperback pages 30cm x 23.5cm, over 160 plates in glowing colour and b/w, chronology and list of exhibited works. £24.99 NOW £7.50

76939 AS THEY REALLY WERE: The Citizens of Alnwick 1831
by Keith Middlemas Percy Forster (born 1801) faithfully recorded in his own notebook portrait sketches of his fellow citizens in the village of Alnwick in 1831. He went on to modest fame as painter and exhibitor at the RA, the Scottish
Academy and elsewhere. Made in the year of the first ever census, his portrait sketches are a unique document in British history. There is no other comparable group of images representing such a cross section of local society presented without the slightest deference to lawyers, shopkeepers, small businessmen, labourers, servants and mothers with children. Here is the shepherd with his collie dog Hector Thompson, the keen fisherman and chemist James Wilson, the celebrated violin player Tom Coward, the boy street seller with duck and kippers and Jackie Thew aged 97 in his silk top hat and cane. The miraculous survival of this record, each with character and occupation identified and recorded in terms of clothing, attitude and attributes, has allowed Keith
Middlemas to explore the social, cultural, economic and political structures of one of the major market towns of northern England at a time when the impact of the Industrial Revolution and political reform were about to transform the community. 176pp, 9" x 11".
£25 NOW £7 74408 PHOTOGRAPHS OF ANGUS McBEAN:
From the Stage to the Surreal by Frederic Woodbridge Wilson Angus McBean (1904-1990) was one of the greats of theatrical, creative and commercial photography, who would probably be better remembered if he had not had the misfortune to be plying his trade at the same time as Cecil Beaton and later David Bailey, to both of whom he was arguably superior technically and artistically but not as adept at the publicity game. In a photographic career spanning the 1930s through to the 1960s he was “court photographer” to the London stage, capturing and immortalising the greatest actors of the age in what are now legendary productions of the works of Shakespeare, Congreve, Shaw, Wilde and Coward, as well as British and early Broadway musicals, the operas of Benjamin Britten and the early years of the Royal Ballet and Royal National Theatre. His portraits from the 1950s and ’60s were frequently jaw-dropping in their composition and impact, as were his more surreal works, often featuring disembodied heads of his famous subjects popping out where you would least expect them! This book, as well as providing a history of the man and his work, features 111 b/w photos of the most incredible quality and impact, each with an explanatory caption. Audrey Hepburn, Olivier, Gielgud, Guinness, Vivien Leigh (many outstanding examples), Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Charles Laughton, Orson Welles, Peggy Ashcroft, Ivor Novello, Noel Coward, Edith Evans, Margaret Rutherford, Maria Callas - the list really is a Who’s Who of 20th century theatre. A sumptuous volume to be treasured. 176pp, 10"×9". £24.95 NOW £8.50
74282 BOB DYLAN: The Brazil Series edited by Elderfield and Monrad
Bob Dylan is not only a world-class singer-songwriter, he is also an artist with a highly individual talent. These 50 canvases in acrylic inspired by visits to Brazil were exhibited in Denmark in late 2010, and the book is a companion to the exhibition, providing full colour reproductions of all the paintings, close-up details from many of them, and articles by art historians. Although some of the art depicts the lives of poor communities, Dylan has said that his paintings are not about social justice, but are attempts to capture a sense of place and atmosphere. In the 70s Dylan took lessons from the Expressionist painter Norman Raeben and these works have an Expressionist feel, reaching out to engage the viewer’s emotions. The first two canvases show a vivid conglomeration of shanty dwellings straggling up a hillside, but most of the paintings have human subjects. Many of them suggest an offstage narrative, as if the characters in a story have frozen for a second. ‘The Eaters’ is a restaurant study, with a man and woman in the foreground struggling with spaghetti and laughing. ‘The Argument’ shows a sequinned young woman turning away from a man, both of them moving impetuously out of the frame. ‘Barber Shop’ depicts a social meeting point, with men exchanging hostile looks. This painting is hard to read, but Dylan has explained it as a father and son conflict. A number of canvases show artists at work, and ‘The Sculptor’ is an eloquent study in controlled absorption, a quality that also dominates the action painting entitled ‘Boxing Gym’. 192pp, fully illustrated in colour. £35 NOW £8

Art and Architecture 15 75012 MONUMENTS OF
EGYPT AND NUBIA by Ippolito Rosellini, edited by Franco Serini The first international scientific mission to Egypt was launched by Leopold II, Grand Duke of Tuscany, led by two Egyptologists who were close friends, the Frenchman Jean- Francois Champollion and the Italian Ippolito Rosellini. The new expedition had the enormous
advantage that, following the Napoleonic discovery of the Rosetta Stone, Champollion had deciphered the hieroglyphic language and a much more systematic study was possible as a result. Rosellini’s Monuments of Egypt and Nubia was subsequently published using data from the expedition, and this beautifully illustrated book reproduces a selection of Rosellini’s prints together with views and scenes recorded by other artists. The plan and elevation of the Garden of Amun found in a Theban nobleman’s tomb is now destroyed, but Rosellini’s print shows papyrus plants and ducks swimming in ornamental pools. Ramesses III’s temple at Medinet Habu has a naval battle scene in which sea marauders attempt to conquer the well-armed Egyptians. 128pp, lavishly illus in colour, 36 x 26cm. £34.95 NOW £6
64161 REGINALD BRILL by Judith Bumpus
Reginald Brill, 1902-1974, was an English realist painter who has recently begun to receive the recognition enjoyed during their lifetimes by Stanley Spencer and William Roberts. He studied at the Slade School and, at the age of 31, became Head Master at Kingston School of Art in Surrey, later becoming its principal. He transformed a poorly organised and cramped institution into one of the most respected art schools in the country. This is the first major study of Brill using his diaries, archive material and anecdotes from friends and students. 89 of his works are reproduced in colour plus 46 monochromes and sketches. Subjects range from the prosaic - three GPO telephone line men in their canvas shelter - to the majestic interior of a mosque in Cairo. First edition, 1999. 144 large pages. £37.50 NOW £6
74022 THE BOOK OF MIRACLES by Till-Holger Borchert and Joshua Waterman
The Book of Miracles that first surfaced a few years ago and is one of the most spectacular new discoveries in the field of Renaissance art. The nearly complete surviving illustrated manuscript which was created in the Swabian Imperial Free City of Augsburg around 1550, is composed of 169 pages with large-format illustrations in gouache and watercolour depicting wondrous and often eerie celestial phenomena, constellations, conflagrations and floods as well as other catastrophes and occurrences. It deals with events ranging from the creation of the world and incidents drawn from the Old Testament, ancient tradition and medieval chronicles to those that took place in the immediate present of the book’s author. With the illustrations of the visionary Book of Revelation, it even includes the future end of the world. The surprisingly modern looking, sometimes hallucinatory illustrations and the cursory descriptions of the Book of Miracles strikingly convey a unique view of the concerns and anxieties of the 16th century, of apocalyptic thinking and eschatological expectation. The present facsimile volume reproduces the Book of Miracles in its entirety for the first time. With an extensive description of the manuscript and its miniatures, as well as a complete transcript of the text, accompany the facsimile. With booklet in a clamshell box, 12.6" x 8.5", 560 pages. Text in English, French and German. From Taschen. ONLY £95

75158 MICHELANGELO,
COMPLETE WORKS by Frank Zöllner Before reaching the tender age of 30, Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564) had already sculpted David and Pietà, two of the most famous sculptures in the entire history of art. As a sculptor, painter, draftsman, and architect, the achievements of this Italian master are unique. This comprehensive book explores Michelangelo’s life and work with a richly illustrated biographical essay, and a complete four-part inventory of his paintings, sculptures, buildings and drawings. Full-page reproductions and enlarged details allow readers to appreciate fine details in the artist’s vast repertoire, while the book’s biographical insights consider a previously unseen extent to Michelangelo’s more personal traits and circumstances, such as his solitary nature, his thirst for money and commissions, his immense wealth and his skill as a property investor. In addition, the book tackles the controversial issue of the attribution of Michelangelo drawings, an area in which decisions continue to be steered by the interests of the art market and the major collections. Its slipcase neatly converting into a book stand. 9.6" x 14.6", 736 pages. ONLY £42
