Seuk tows the raft out 150 yards into Puget Sound.

Vinh Le-Truog (clockwise from left), Naomi Kindem, Eric Kindem, Kai Kindem and Michael Truog hoist the 150-pound raft on their way to the beach late last summer.

Te first step in building the

raſt was to form a couple of work parties. Four families pitched in, including the children. Peace member Michael Truog

procured the materials for less than $300. Tey included 4-inch PVC pipe, wood for the frame, and a 4-by-6-foot piece of plywood for the platform. Te volunteers drilled, pounded and tied the raſt together on the church patio. Tey painted “Stay Away” in red on the side of the raſt as a reminder to boaters to give the creatures their space. When it was done, they brought

it to the beach and carried it down the steep stairs of a cement beach bulkhead. Tree kayaks towed it out, and it was anchored and tethered. Peterson, who now drops by

occasionally at Peace, believes churches have only scratched the surface of creation care: “Tere’s a huge opportunity for people of spirit here to engage in God’s creation.” Since the raſt project, Peace has

been recognized by Earth Ministry, a Seattle-based group devoted to church environmental efforts. And in this case, moving the

animals a little farther away from the teeming humanity on the beach has touched hearts at Peace. “It gives you a sense of purpose and hope,” Peterson said. “An animal is going to live because of you.” 

One of many projects The raft for seals was a natural step for a congregation purposely growing

premises and at small parks in West Seattle. They’ve held neighborhood plant exchanges, and worked with Seattle City Light to convert the interior lighting at Peace to high-efficiency standards. They’ve also replaced an old oil furnace with two gas boilers, dramatically reducing the fuel bill.
