KraussMaffei Berstorff’s Eco- Line microwave channels have helped Trelleborg reduce energy costs

The low-shear mixer – which Reiloy Westland sees as being appropriate to all types of plastics processing applications, including extrusion – provides both dispersive and distributive mixing, improves isothermal melt quality and increases throughput. The new concept will be seen at the show. “The projected quality mixing obtained, without

introducing excessive shear, will offer improved profi tability,” said the company. Another new concept is a special ‘NPE app’, which

will allow visitors to make their visit to the event easier. As well as advice on travelling to Orlando and a guide to the city, users can register their attendance at the show and book appointments with the company. The app also includes the latest edition of the company’s Barrel and Screw Handbook.

Microwave seal Sometimes, special applications dictate that the traditional approach of plasticising using a screw alone is not appropriate. This was the case with Trelleborg, a Swedish producer of sealing profi les for the automotive and building industries – which has begun using two EcoLine microwave channels from KraussMaffei Berstorff.

Trelleborg fi rst saw the technology in action at a

KraussMaffei open house event, and signed the purchase order for the two lines at K2013. The reason for the investment was to reduce operating costs in the energy-intensive vulcanization process. “In view of the results – in terms of productivity and quality – we decided to opt for this solution to further increase our productivity,” said Joakim Hansson, purchasing manager at Trelleborg. Four microwave channel modules are each equipped with a generator of 6kW magnetron power. A circulator integrated into the energy supply transfers any energy not absorbed by the product to the connected water load, to improve magnetron service life. The channel has a total installed magnetron power

of 24kW. The microwave generators are arranged above and below the conveyor belt. The microwave coupling system is designed to ensure a homogeneous fi eld distribution. Both the microwave power and conveyor belt speed can be continuously adjusted. The microwave channel has an effective cross-section of 280mm width and 150mm height. A central control panel ensures that system settings can be selected with ease. A process-oriented user interface helps to reduce set-up times during material changes.

“Special features of the EcoLine microwave channel are reduced waste gas losses and the energy-optimised switched-mode power supplies,” said Helmut Lüders, product manager for rubber profi le production lines at KraussMaffei Berstorff.

“Closed circulation of the process air provides

maximum cost savings, as 90% of the energy-intensive hot air remains in the system.”

Another new feature is improved thermal insulation of the process chambers, he said.
