MACHINE HANDLING CELL opens up new possibilities
A flexible and compact machine handling cell is now available from ABB for use in a wide range of machine tool loading and unloading applications. Developed by Swedish automation specialist SVIA, the cell is simple to master and can typically be installed and operational in just two days, making it well suited for companies with little or no experience in robot automation

nstalled in over 500 applications to date, the
cell has been proven to deliver payback within as little as three months, with benefits including improved productivity and totally unmanned operation. Measuring just 1.5m x 3m, the
cell is built around an ABB robot in conjunction with SVIA’s PickMT technology. This technology enables the robot to see the parts it is handling, allowing it to easily adjust to a
wide variety of parts. This increased flexibility makes the PickMT system well suited for operations handling smaller volumes of the same part and, due to the speed and agility afforded by the smart camera
function, also highly effective for operations that handle large volumes of the same part. A major advantage of PickMT is its ability to recognise items regardless of their orientation, eliminating the need for separate
tooling to be used to present and place parts in a particular way. Within the cell, the technology is
tightly integrated with ABB’s IRC 5 Controller providing ‘plug-and-play’ simplicity that allows users to easily set- up and adapt the system to their specific applications. It is programmed on a PC with a user friendly interface. The time needed to teach new parts is reduced to just 15 minutes by a step-by-step process, which can be simply carried out by the machine operator. The ability of the cell to handle multiple parts simultaneously means it can be used with up to three machines at a time. Changeover between products can be quickly achieved simply by switching between programs. There is also the ability to incorporate auto-change for tooling if required.
