Compact PLCs with IEC 61131-3 FPWIN Pro Software
Panasonic offer a portfolio of products including automation components, timers, counters and temperature controllers up to PLC and HMI systems
T
he PLC product range covers I/O counts meeting micro to large
requirements. Within this range, there are three different series of compact PLCs to meet the majority of market demands. Since the beginning of PLC technology Panasonic has been a leader in the area of compact PLCs - their most prominent features include their small size, combined with advanced functionality and excellent quality for industrial use making them suitable for the most demanding operating conditions. Their smallest PLC is the modular FP0R series which offers high functionality and fast processing speeds. Control units with I/O counts ranging from 10 I/O up to 32 I/O can be expanded with both digital and analogue expansion units allowing up to 128 digital I/O counts. The FP-Sigma series shares a similar concept - as well as I/O expansion units with the FP0R Series it features larger program and data memory areas. Furthermore it can be expanded with a further four application specific units including high density I/O, Ethernet and Pulse Control for the Servo Drive system. This system allows a total of up to 384 local digital I/Os to be configured as well as further possibilities to connect to open bus network systems including Profibus/Profinet, DeviceNet and CANOpen for numerous automation applications. For a more traditional PLC format Panasonic recommend the FP-X Series which is configured as a classic ‘shoebox’ type PLC. It can be equipped with up to three add-on cassettes providing extra functionality in the areas of serial communications and small I/O modules. Like the FP0R series and FP-Sigma series, there are many intelligent expansion units available e.g. for communication and/or motion control.
SOFTWARE All Panasonic PLCs are programmed with the programming software suite, FPWIN Pro, which conforms to the IEC 61131-3 standard. In addition, there is an
extensive collection of libraries that have been developed over many years covering all requirements from the automation industry, building automation or different environmental technologies. These include a modem library for communication with analogue and GSM modems, MODBUS library to support MODBUS communication with all Panasonic PLCs and many more Modbus compatible devices.
Below: Panasonic’s PLC product range offers powerful and efficient solutions for many applications, not only found in the classic environments of
industrial automation but the developing areas of building automation and environmental telemetry
adjusting brightness or controlling control bits and words. Programming examples from the online help can be copied and pasted into your project for easy reuse. The Control FPWIN Pro Web-Server
library allows you to take advantage of the FP Web-Server functions quickly and easily e.g. sending an e-mail, controlling an FTP client, establishing a PPP connection or synchronising the clock with NTP. This way, users can perform remote maintenance or remote control with a standard internet browser.
SUMMARY The FPWIN Pro Motion Control library has been updated and shortens the time required for commissioning, resetting the motion controller, motor or an external encoder in regards to the PLC and, thanks to a high output frequency range, enables exact positioning and movement. Panasonic’s PLC product range offers
For programming of the PLCs, FPWIN
Pro offers the five standard programming languages of the IEC 61131-3 standard - these include ladder diagram, instruction list, function block diagram, structured text and sequential function chart. Furthermore, the programming software allows you to configure and implement open networks such as PROFIBUS, CANopen or DeviceNet. The biggest advantage is that FPWIN Pro creates all variable addresses and makes them instantly available for the programmer, thus preventing possible errors. The programming software saves all bus data together with the project so that this information is included in the project file and not stored separately. The new function blocks for serial
communication cover 90% of all practical applications. Moreover, diverse tasks for the Panasonic GT series programmable HMI displays are now easy to manage e.g. changing screens,

powerful and efficient solutions for many applications, not only found in the classic environments of industrial automation but the developing areas of building automation and environmental telemetry. Here other products from the Panasonic portfolio, including environmental Eco Power Meters, WEBServers, HMIs used for the control and monitoring of energy applications, complement the powerful features of the PLC products.
