Maritim proARTE Hotel, Berlin
A good choice for virgin Berliners, the spacious hotel is located within minutes of Norman Foster’s Reichstag dome, the Brandenburg Gate and Potsdamer Platz. With 403 rooms and suites, two restaurants, a sociable bar
and a wellness area with pool, sauna and steam room, the Maritim proARTE is as well-appointed as it is convenient. Modern artwork adorns the walls, while proARTE suites
have lounge areas and bathrooms with deep tubs to soak tired limbs after a day of sightseeing. The only drawback is the decor, which could do with being freshened up a touch. Breakfast was a suitably German affair, with queues of
guests waiting to tuck into glasses of Prosecco, freshly cooked omelettes, cold meats and cheeses, and thick slices of dark, nutty bread. An hour after being seated, we were still making our way
through hot coffee and fresh croissants, with an oversized map of the city monopolising the table in preparation for the day ahead. Jo Gardner

The Fitzwilliam Hotel, Belfast
Located next to Belfast’s Grand Opera House, the comparatively discreet-looking Fitzwilliam isn’t much to shout about from the outside, but once through the door you’ll find a stylish lobby with high ceilings, modern furniture and statement light fittings. Part of the Preferred Hotel Group, the hotel has 130 guest
rooms. Mine, on the seventh floor, had large windows across one wall, with views of the city and the hills beyond. The bed was comfy, with soft feather pillows, while my modern,
minimalist room had a desk-cum-dressing table and eye-catching yellow sofa, which stood out against the monochrome decor. Meanwhile, the neat black bathroom had plenty of toiletries. Downstairs, tucked away, is an intimate bar, while the restaurant
has received positive reviews for its all-day menu — although I found breakfast slightly disappointing. And if you fancy eating out, The Fitzwilliam is a short walk from the bars and restaurants of the Cathedral Quarter. Nicky Trup
