BUCKNER SNAPSHOT Phyllis and Myrtle

Phyllis Browne, a resident at Buckner Villas in Austin, has had her pet turtle for 57 years. Aptly named Myrtle, she has been on many adventures with the Browne family and has lived all over the country.

Myrtle joined the Browne family in 1957 when their pet Doberman, Clarence Von Tessinjohn, picked her up in Kansas one rainy afternoon. Over the years, Myrtle and Clarence grew to be best friends. In fact, Myrtle would share food and water with the Doberman and was often seen cuddling during naptime. Myrtle also befriended all the pets that succeeded Clarence. Even though she often eats fresh fruit, she still loves dog food.

One time many years ago, Phyllis took Myrtle with her on a plane trip. Myrtle was in her carrier, but the airline wanted to charge Phyllis $40 for an extra seat, which “was a lot at that time,” she said. So Phyllis stuck Myrtle in her coat pocket, went through security and safely boarded the plane. Myrtle rode in her lap the whole time. Myrtle now roams the patio of Phyllis’ Buckner Villas

apartment. She has various play areas and a chicken-wire fence to keep her safe. “She’s been with us a long time, but we have no idea how old she was when she first joined our family,” Phyllis said. “She’s been with me for so long, and she’s moved all over the country. I can’t imagine life without her.” n
