buckner.org Turning 20 FEATURED VIDEO
THE ONLY PLACE TO READ THE STORIES BEHIND THE STORIES.
Thirty percent of the population in Ethiopia lives on less than $1.25 a day, and many orphans struggle through day-to-day life. Samrawit Fesha, an orphan since age 11, has been living by herself trying to survive in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Through its foster care and Family Hope Center, Buckner Ethiopia is providing care, support and encouragement for Samrawit and allowing her to hope for a better future. Learn more at

I have a baby who turns 20 in 2015. It’s not my daughter, who is a freshman in college and will always be “my baby.” No, it’s my other baby. In fact, you’re holding her. In 1995, we re-introduced Buckner Today as a magazine. The reasoning was simple – there are so many life-transforming stories at Buckner that we needed a vehicle to help us share them. Our desire is to “tell the Buckner story by telling Buckner stories.” The goal is to use Buckner Today as a vehicle to take you places you could not otherwise venture. We’ve traveled all over the world where Buckner ministers, to places as far as China and Ethiopia, to Egypt and Central America, from the Rio Grande Valley to Amarillo and places in between. But if Buckner Today has only taken you to geo- graphical locations, then we failed at our mission. We want to take you to places of the heart; places where you can see the life-changing ministry of Buckner in the lives of children, families and senior adults. The communications theorist Marshall McLuhan once famously said, “The medium is the message.” It’s a great quote and I’ve used it throughout my career. How you say what you say is often as impor- tant as what you say. We are mindful of that as we present each issue of Buckner Today. However, in this case, I have to differ with McLuhan. While we take great pride in the design and presentation of each story, we are always mindful that the story is the story, not the magazine or for that matter, the writer. In this digital era, the day may come when we no
longer hold a magazine, but instead scroll through our computer screens or some other electronic device. For now, the baby you’re holding in your hands is still the vehicle of choice.
Our desire is as you read these pages, it not only
gives you a better view of Buckner, but inspires you to become a part of the movement. That may be asking a lot of a 20-year-old, but why not? She’s not a teenager anymore.
