KOMPERDA AWARD RECIPIENTS ANNOUNCED T e Joyce Komperda Athlete Support Fund was established in 2009 by Joyce Komperda in honor of her parents, who enrolled her in her fi rst fi gure


skating lessons for health reasons. From that moment, Joyce became an avid skater and passionate advocate for the sport. When Joyce’s parents passed away she elected to honor them by investing the monies she inherited to help support the dreams of novice, intermediate and junior skaters who demonstrate a love of skating and fi nancial need. T ree awardees were determined by Joyce for the 2014 season; each skater will be awarded $5,000.


Natalie McLain


is a student at the University of Cal- ifornia, San Diego in the neurosci- ence and physi- ology program. A cocaptain of the UCSD Figure Skating Team, she helped to double the size of the team and secured a bid for one of three Pacifi c Coast regional intercollegiate competitions. Awarded the Girl Scout Gold Award, McLain took the initiative to renovate the South Pasade- na Woman’s Club through community fundraising, involvement and 80 hours of volunteering. She hopes to establish herself as a coach, as well as promote further growth for the UCSD Figure Skating Team in order to reach the U.S. Intercollegiate Championships.


Christopher Elder


is an eighth grade student at St. Margaret Mary School in Louis- ville, Kentucky. A straight-A student, he has also been a member of the Russian School of Mathematics since the age of 4. He and his sister Sophia train in the discipline of ice dance, and they are two-time winners of the Mid- western Sectional Championships. Elder’s fi gure skating goals include competing for the United States at the international level and taking the 2015 U.S. title in intermedi- ate dance. Overcoming several struggles in recent years, Elder credits the support of his mother for both his drive and achievements.


Raegan Toomey is a sophomore at the West Notting- ham Academy in Colora, Maryland. An ice dancer hoping to qualify for the U.S. Figure Skating Champi- onships, Toomey competed in the 2011 Solo Dance Series in the Eastern section and advanced to the 2011 National Solo Dance Championships. In addition to her skating achievements, Pencil Pals, a char- ity started by Toomey in the fi rst grade, has helped 3,000 underprivileged children obtain their school supplies. She is a learn-to-skate teacher and hopes to win not only the U.S. Championships with her partner, but an ISU Junior Grand Prix, an ISU Grand Prix and an Olympic gold medal.
