BUSINESSES ARE GROWING THROUGH IT R
ittal has sponsored a White Paper on how companies can succeed in the face of global competition.
International market research company IDC examined the influence that data centres have on the economic success of small and medium sized businesses. This research has shown that IT is an important factor
in achieving business goals and that companies are willing to invest in technologies such as cloud, Big Data, or mobile computing, but are concerned over the potential risks. Findings, at a glance, indicate that if a company was
commercially successful last year, this has a direct impact on the IT budget and there is a direct correlation between IT spending and revenue growth. New technologies are changing IT strategy. IT systems
need to evolve continuously so the data centre can be as efficient as possible in providing IT services. Having an in-house data centre is a key to success, as aspects such as reliability and availability have a high priority. Of the IT managers questioned 93% found it important for a company to have its own data centre.
“IT infrastructures need to be renewed to keep pace
with the market. The question is whether to modernise or to rebuild,” explained Bernd Hanstein, vice president product management IT at Rittal. “We see a great deal of potential in efficient, adaptive cooling concepts. IT managers can then fully exploit the advantages of greater flexibility and reductions in ancillary costs.” To read the full story visit

EFFICIENCY FOR EUROPEAN FOOTBALL GIANTS
The Allianz Arena, home to Bayern Munich Football Club, has made a raft of improvements to the exterior of the stadium using a collection of more than 380,000 ultra-efficient LED lights. The stadium has become famous in recent years
for the wall of bright light that has been installed around the outside of the building. The installation of lights usually projects the team’s red and blue colours on match days, but now with the collection of super high-tech new LED bulbs, it can put on spectacular light shows - all while slashing lighting energy usage by around 60%.
The move has been funded by lighting provider Philips, which is one of the many brands in stock at UK
lighting provider BLT Direct. Steven Ellwood, managing director, commented, “The new project at the Allianz Arena is going to showcase some fairly amazing results, with daring and dynamic light shows that are helping to cut Bayern Munich FC’s carbon emissions by over 360 tonnes. We’re finally at a stage in lighting production where functionality and aesthetics can go hand-in-hand - consuming less energy doesn’t have to be all about producing less light - it’s just about creating light more efficiently.”

VDS CERTIFICATION FOR LX RANGE
Power management company Eaton has announced that its Fulleon business, a manufacturer of life saving alarm devices, has been granted VdS certification for its LX range of visual alarm devices. This certification reinforces the safety credentials of the LX range as it now meets Germany’s highest product standards in fire protection and safety technology. VdS is accredited by the Deutsche
Akkreditierungsstelle Technik (DATech) according to DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025 for the testing of products and according to DIN EN 45011 for the certification of products. To secure the approval, the LX range had to be tested by the VdS laboratories on the basis of VdS guidelines and also go through a certification by the VdS certification office. Eaton’s LX range with patented lens technology was
initially introduced to meet the requirements of the recently enforced EN 54-23 standard, a uniform standard for visual alarm devices (VADs) to improve life
safety in high noise areas and increase notification for the hearing impaired. The EU standard, that came into effect in January 2014, requires that a light level of 0.4 lux per square metre is dispersed across the entire area. The devices are based on Fulleon product platforms
providing easy recognition and the reassurance of reliability and efficiency. The LX range consists of six products comprised of wall mounted devices and ceiling application devices, all of which have coverage of 7.5m.

Earlier this year the Electrical Distributors Association (EDA) celebrated its 100th anniversary with a celebration at Kensington Palace. The day kicked-off in the morning with a press briefing, hosted by EDA director Margaret Fitzsimons, where the history of the EWF and the EDA was discussed. In addition to ideas for the future and the next 100 years, the EDA board of management were also on hand to discuss their various roles. Also up for discussion was the EDA’s new book on the history of the association. Written by former EDA president Mike Beswetherick, it was presented to the guests at the centenary lunch.
