Italia Yachts and designer Matteo Polli take a big step up the performance curve Italia 9.98 Fuoriserie

It’s rare that a luxury cruiser brand finds potential in building performance boats, but this is what Matteo Polli and Italia Yachts have done with the new Italia 9.98 Fuoriserie, a performance racer-cruiser recently launched in Italy. Following the specific request of three-time ORC World Champion Giuseppe Giuffre of Low Noise fame, this new 34-footer is designed for fun racing under ORC (GPH 629.4sec/mi) and IRC, while still being comfortable enough for an occasional overnight cruise.

The design is the work of Italia Yachts chief designer Matteo Polli, whose experiences with the Italia Yachts range and the M37 in particular helped make this one of the most successful boats in ORCi history. Polli has been working with Matteo Ledri of Cape Horn Engineering, one of the few Italians to be involved in the latest America’s Cup, for CFD analysis, and with Kristian Macchiut of KMD for the interior and deck.

The hull and deck are built using various densities of PVC foam, with skins of E-glass biaxial and unidirectional reinforce- ment impregnated with vinylester resin. A carbon-reinforced frame integrates the floors and interior, creating a single structure that supports the loads of the mast, keel and shrouds. The hull lines are the outcome of CFD and statistical analyses cross-referenced using performance prediction programs and compared under the various rating systems. These studies have led to a new hull geometry; having slender waterlines and straight buttocks when upright gives an offwind advantage, whereas at increasing heeling angles the waterlines soon get much wider ensuring greater stability while still remaining symmetrical and balanced. The medium-light displacement is targeted at a sensible balance between pure performance and rating.

With a weight of 4,500kg and a ballast ratio over 40% the good-looking new Italia 9.98 promises

sparkling pace. The interior is modern and functional

CFD has also been extensively used for the appendages. The fin-torpedo assembly – which is entirely lead – has a high hydro- dynamic efficiency while accounting for over 40% of the dry displace- ment of 4,500kg. The generous rudder area and high aspect ratio ensure excellent control and sensitivity at the helm. The sail plan was designed in collaboration with North Sails Italy. The result is a rig with a relatively low forestay attachment, generous non-overlapping foresails with reasonable aspect ratio. The mainsail has a moderate square-head with considerable roach but without the need for runners. Spinnakers can be flown from a pole or bowsprit depending on choice and type of racing. The deck lines were modelled looking for the best compromise between aerodynamics and internal volumes, while taking strong account of aesthetics. A lot of effort went into finding ergonomic solutions for efficient racing – both crewed and shorthanded. The modern interior consists of two cabins, one head aft and a central salon with galley and chart table. Elements such as lockers are removable to lighten displacement in day racing mode. Matteo Polli
