Commodore’s letter A


s the 2014 European season draws towards a close the focus of activity turns elsewhere. In particular, we can look forward to following the Volvo Ocean Race over the coming months. On any view it is a major feat for Volvo to have brought seven good teams to the startline, prov- ing the wisdom of the decision to introduce a one-design class and taking out the development risks. Only time will tell whether the boats are equally robust and to what extent lack of time on the water will be a disadvantage to those crews, how- ever strong on paper, that declared only a few months before the start. I am sure we will all watch with interest. We also have the spectacle of the Route du Rhum with an impressive entry which includes eight large trimarans and some forty Class 40s. Let’s hope the weather allows them a peaceful exit from the English Channel.


In the RORC programme, following the Rolex Middle Sea Race in October we have the inaugural RORC Transatlantic Race starting on 29 November from Lanzarote to Grenada. This is designed as a feeder for the Caribbean season and hopefully will grow into a significant event in its own right.


Upsetting the form book slightly were the young Americans on Alvimedica – winners of the first Volvo In-Port Race in Alicante a week ahead of the start of leg 1 to Cape Town…


For my own part I am looking forward to the experience of the Rolex Sydney-Hobart celebrating its 70th year. This must be on every RORC commodore’s to-do list and so I was delighted to be invited. We are planning an event for RORC members and friends in Sydney on 18 December. This is also the time of year for the administration of our sport to look ahead. The annual IRC Congress brings together delegates representing the countries with active IRC fleets; after experiencing some declines in certificate numbers it is good to be able to report that in 2014 numbers have stabilised and indeed may show a small increase on 2013. There are remarkably few changes in the offing for 2015, another sign of stability, and it is evident that the rule continues to work well within its simple parameters.


The RORC is putting the final touches to its programme for 2015 – of course, it is a Rolex Fastnet year where the fleet will be augmented by a strong contingent coming across on the Transatlantic Race from Newport in June. There are a few refinements to the race for 2015: the 100ft LOA limit will be waived to allow super - yachts participating in the Atlantic Ocean Racing Series to compete, plus we are reviewing the course to simplify the effects of TSS zones. 2015 is also the 90th anniversary of the first Fastnet race, and founding of RORC, and that will need to be celebrated in appropriate style!
