This J-Class foredeck shot might have been captured by Gilles Martin-Raget in St Tropez, but the conditions are far from typical Côte d’Azur… There are already four more new J-Class designs in our custom build table and we are standing by for details of another two which are currently out to tender. One interesting paradox of the ‘modern’ J-Class is that recent restorations and new builds have all featured luxury interiors which, as superyacht designer Malcolm Mckeon (pg29) highlights, increases construction cost and leads to some compromise in terms of freeboard and displacement. The problem is that, with five or six Js now actively racing, the fleet is not likely to vote for the appearance of any new and stripped-out rivals. Of course for the lucky few who, having got the race bug in the J-Class, now want to move on to something more purposeful there is the slowly growing family of 100-footers, the latest of which is J-Class Hanuman owner Jim Clark’s new Commanche (which we will look at in detail next month). The explosion of interest in racing between ‘very large yachts’ has been a tremendous boost to the industry and has helped to fill the measurable gap caused by the America’s Cup switching to solid-wing multihulls – slim pickings there for traditional sailmakers in particular. Staying with the ‘big boat’ theme, while we celebrate the success of the Volvo Ocean Race as it launches seven high-performance one-designs around the globe, for design aficionados there is also encouraging strength in the Imoca 60 class with six new designs already confirmed for the next Vendée Globe in 2016. Thoroughly excellent!

Amazing consistency and inspirational loyalty…
The first all-new Class 40 design for a while from Guillaume Verdier… this is Route du Rhum skipper Yannick Bestaven’s Tizh which was launched recently by BG Race in St Malo. Fellow ETNZ alumni Len Imas and Romain Garo worked with Verdier in a comprehensive CFD programme for the new boat, which features more dynamic righting moment and a large increase in longitudinal dynamic stability compared to its predecessors. The final build weight also came out under target – follow with interest!
