devastating fungus called “coffee rust” that affects thousands of coffee plants in Central America. While visiting a water sanitation project, we witnessed the

pride with which the community explained its new source of clean water and the effects of water access on the community. Local musicians serenaded us with songs about conservation and God’s gift of water. Had the partnership between LWR and Concordia ended

after last May’s visit to Nicaragua, I would have called it a suc- cess. But nurturing our shared roots has helped us imagine ways to grow together in the months and years to come.

Campus connections

This past summer, two Concordia students completed

internships at the LWR’s Minneapolis office. Part of their work included planning a first-ever “LWR Week” on campus this fall. The week of interactive programming, storytelling, consciousness-raising and fair-trade coffee will culminate in a quilting event on campus. Quilting groups from local congregations will work with students to prepare blankets for LWR’s “Quilts & Kits” ministry. Our students will also share their experiences in Nicaragua with several congregations. We study faith organizations and sustainable develop-

ment in my faith and leadership courses, but nothing I say in the classroom makes as deep an impact with our students as actually partnering with LWR. 

Colleges, universities, campus ministries and congregations can get involved by: • Buying and selling fair-trade products. Encourage the use of fair-trade coffee and chocolate on campus. Many of the farmers that Concordia students visited in Nicaragua flourish because of the benefits of fair trade. To learn more, visit www.lwr.org/fairtrade. • Putting together quilts and kits. Like congregation members, college and uni- versity students can also collect and assemble school kits or personal care kits. Learn more at www.lwr.org/kits.
