rom the heat and humidity of Malaysia and Singapore to the sun of Sydney and the rain of New Zealand, the Oundle School girls’ hockey club made the
most of the long school break with a three- week tour of a lifetime across the Pacific Ocean. In all the 34 girls played 20 matches against local schools and clubs – and even got a chance to train with the NSW Institute of Sport’s head coach, Larry Macintosh, at Sydney’s Olympic Stadium. Throughout the tour, the standard of hockey was well-balanced, with the Oundle girls winning nine, drawing three and losing eight of their games.
“Travelling with 33 other girls from different
years to Australasia and Far East Asia was an amazing experience, be it on or off the pitch,” says Polly Baker (16). “We were all fortunate to share many cultural experiences together – bartering in a market in Kuala Lumpur, climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge, atending a traditional Maori feast and watching an amusing sheep show in New Zealand! The standard of hockey was very high and we enjoyed both the victories and defeats which have allowed us to move forward as a hockey club in preparation for what we hope will be a very successful season.”
