Tips from the Bridge Question:
What are the first nuggets of instruction you give anglers prior to taking them out to sea on charter boats?
Capt. Larry Phoenix, Rampage Sportfishing in Dana Point:
When they go out on a six-pack boat, I tell them to listen
to the crew. When it comes to fighting your fish, I tell them about moving with the fish and getting a line out in front of you all the time. When you’re fishing bait out of the tank, if you do, just try to take one or two bait at a time instead of a whole scoop-full. When you have fish up to gaff, do not take

Magnum MR bait Designed by Bassmaster 2009 Classic win- ner and 2007 Elite Series Angler of the Year Skeet Reese, the Lucky Craft S.K.T. 10 Magnum MR is built to produce results and perfect bait for throwing over mid-depth rock piles, ledges and points. At 105mm, the Magnum MR is sized to match the forage bigger fish feed on, such as bluegill, crappie and perch. The bait has a tight wobble action that
attracts the large prizes, but doesn’t create a pull against the rod that baits of this size typi- cally produce. The S.K.T Magnum MR dives to a maximum depth of 14 feet and is available in approxi- mately 16 different colors. Baits are $19.99 each. Contact

their head out of the water. Keep it in the water, because it is almost impossible to gaff a fish that is straight up and down. We explain all of this to them, and then we’re right there alongside them when they’re catching fish. Some people can’t hook them at first, so we try to teach them the tech- niques—how long to let the fish run with the bait in its mouth before you hook it—things like that. We have pretty good success. Most of the time, we can get them fishing. Lately, this last week, we’ve had a few charters where
they didn’t know what they were doing at all. We tried to get them to listen to us, and we told them to follow the fish, keep the line in front of you and keep the pole up—don’t point the pole at the fish. If you lose them that way, it gives them just enough slack to shake loose. Capt. Larry Phoenix can be contacted at rampagesportfish-
