plan. In some instances, the underly- ing cause of tinnitus can be readily addressed.

One of my patients came to me with sudden onset tinnitus in both ears. Her tinnitus started shortly after she had been involved in an automobile accident six weeks before. We had her lie down on a flat surface and the tinnitus went away! When she sat up, the tinnitus returned. We discov- ered that her tinnitus symptoms were caused by an untreated neck injury. She was referred to a physician and a physical therapist to address her neck and, in the process, her tinnitus symptoms went away.

Q A

My tinnitus gets worse every time I fly on an

airplane. Why? What can I do to prevent this from happening?

A few thoughts for you: common triggers for tinnitus include stress and noise. Another

factor can be Eustachian Tube Dysfunction (ETD,)

caused by middle ear disease or allergies. Changes in barometric pressure while flying could worsen tinnitus due to one, some, or all of these triggers. When you have to fly, practicing relaxation exer- cises, protecting your hearing, and using a nasal spray before take off and landing might be your best ticket.
