The railway industry claims incredible gas mileage, about 450 mpg. How is this possible? —N.B., Gaithersburg, Md. To match it, a one-ton car would have to get 450 mpg, and a two-ton vehicle would have to get 225 mpg. To car own- ers, this seems unbelievable. How can railroads do it? First, a train weighs far more than one ton, so it consumes much of that gas mileage just moving itself. Still, trains are extremely efficient. They have the benefit of an infrastructure that in- cludes steel wheels rolling on steel rails (instead of soft rub- ber tires making frequent turns on pavement), highly sophisti- cated braking systems, and far, far fewer starts and stops.
