May 10-Dec. 27 • Shore Fishing at Dockweiler Beach, Playa del Rey. Every Saturday from 9 a.m.-10:30 a.m. at Dockweiler Youth Center, the Department of Beaches & Harbors presents a free intro- duction to shore fishing class. Limited to 10 participants per session. Anyone under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Anyone over the age of 16 must pres- ent a valid California fishing license to par- ticipate. Vehicle entry is $2. June 14-Sept. 14 • 2014 Junior Tournament, Newport Beach. Catch as many species as you can. Hauls must be at least one pound and legal size. Accepting entries all summer long. Entry forms are available at the Balboa Angling Club, Angler’s Center, Grant Boys, JD’s Tackle and Davey’s Locker. Cost is $10. An awards bar- becue will be held at 1 p.m., Oct. 5 at the BAC dock. July 31- Aug. 3 • Helen Smith Offshore Tournament, Newport Beach. The 14th annual tournament named for the former Balboa Angling Club secretary kicks off with a Potluck Porch Party July 31. The tourna- ment is strictly for reeling in albacore, dora- do, tuna and yellowtail using up to 30# test line. Eligible tuna are yellowfin, bluefin and big eye. Registration includes a kick-off party, three days of fishing and a tourna- ment award party held at the BAC club- house Aug. 3. Baja. One of three tournaments produced by Bisbee’s in Baja, Calif. Sur, the annual tournament kicks off with registration at the Hotel Buena Vista Beach Resort and a cocktail party on Aug. 5. Three straight days of action-packed fishing follows. An award celebration will be held Aug. 9 at the beach- front. Base entry for the tournament is $1,500. Aug. 9 • IGFA/UPSAC Junior Angler Series, Shelter Island. The California Fishing Passport Program joins forces with the International Game Fish Association and the San Diego Sportfishing Council to host the 12th annual day of pier fishing. The event will run from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Trophies are awarded to winners in every age group, along with fishing rods, reels and tackle donated by sponsors. For more details, email board@upsac.org.


Aug. 9 • Fishing Tackle Swap Meet, Long Beach. The Daniel Hernandez Youth Foundation will host a fishing tackle swap meet at 251 N. Marina Dr. The event is free to attend. Aug. 16 • Huck Finn Fishing Derby, Huntington Beach. The 51st annual Huck Finn Fishing Derby will be held at the Huntington Beach Pier. Open to children between the ages of 4-15. Cal Boating will provide loaner rods and bait, California Fishing Passports, passport stamps and California Finfish and Shellfish Identification books. Aug. 22-24 • Cabo/Hatteras/Viking Challenge, Newport Beach. Stan Miller Yachts invites all Cabo, Hatteras, and Viking Yacht owners to the 12th annual owner’s tournament at Basin Marine. Participants will compete in the large tuna/albacore, dorado, yellowtail, sea base and release marlin categories. Boats will spread throughout the Southern California coast- line and into Mexican waters. Check-in/reg- istration for the three-day event will also be held at Stan Miller’s San Diego office. Aug. 23 • Newport Harbor Bay Bass Open, Newport Beach. Hosted by the Balboa Angling Club, the event has an entry fee of $60, which covers a maximum of three anglers. Catches are restricted to spotted bay bass only with a minimum of 13 inches. Other guidelines include using lures only, no live or dead bait and no trolling. There are also no line test requirements.
