2 OC teens earn highest Sea Scout honors.

DANA POINT — Annemarie Kibbe of Laguna Niguel and Joshua Johnson of San Clemente were laud- ed by fellow members of Mariners 936 of Dana Point for their commit- ment, dedication and perseverance. The teens were promoted to the

Oil Filter Service, Inc MARINE AND INDUSTRIAL FILTRATION SPECIALIST SINCE 1945

revered rank of Quartermaster dur- ing a special celebration. The award is the Sea Scout equivalent of Eagle Scout and is difficult to attain. A scout must be able to lead all their fellow scouts, teach skills learned in previous merit badges, and show knowledge of the water on various levels. Kibbe and Johnson received the

award upon completion of lengthy, sustainable community service projects that are one of the many requirements for Quartermaster promotion. Kibbe’s project consisted of building much needed trophy

shelves for Aliso Niguel High School’s band room. Kibbe will attend the Honors Program at Colorado State University to study engineering and plans to become involved in Engineers without Borders during her college experi- ence and sets her sights on a career that will help others. Johnson’s project was construc- tion of a fence, gates, and rabbit fencing for the teaching garden at Concordia Elementary School. Josh has now attained all of scouting’s highest ranks/awards. An accom- plishment that less than 10 scouts within the Orange County Council can lay claim to. He is the first per- son to do so in the El Camino Real district. Johnson will attend California Maritime Academy in the fall majoring in Mariner Transportation. For more information on becom-

ing a Sea Scout, visit Mariners936.com or email info@mariners936.com.

The San Salvador, a 100-foot full- rigged galleon that served as the flagship for explorer Juan Rodriquez Cabrillo in 1542, received its final plank, Wednesday, July 2 at the ship’s rebuild site at the Maritime Museum of San Diego. The final plank, known as the Whiskey Plank, was put in place by the crew who has been working to reconstruct the vessel.

Although the ship is

far from completion, shipbuilders often mark the installation of the final plank as a major milestone in the con- struction of a ship. For more information on the ship’s rebuild, visit sdmar- itime.org.
