band used the satellite phone to call the Coast Guard for advice. The Coast Guard told him that a doctor would return his call. However before he received a reply the company deactivated the phone, pre- venting him from receiving a return call. The complaint filed July 14 in the

Superior Court in San Diego by Charlotte Kaufman against Whenever Communications, LLC doing business as SattellitePhoneStore.com, claims that if they hadn’t lost service, they would’ve been able to get medical advice over the satellite phone. Instead, she said, they were forced to

activate an Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon on April 3 that alerted the Coast Guard and set off a huge rescue effort that involved pararescuemen from the California National Guard’s 129th Rescue Wing based at Moffett Federal Airfield near San Francisco and the Navy’s guided-missile frigate USS Vandegrift that eventually brought the family back to San Diego.

The San Diego Union-Tribune reported July 16 that Attorney Matthew Herron, representing Whenever Communications said that he had sent a letter to the Kaufman’s San Diego home addressing the SIM card switch, but that the family had already departed for Mexico. Herron also said the company sent an email to the Kaufman’s dated April 15 — nearly two weeks after the at-sea incident, the newspaper reported. Rebel Heart, the 36-foot sailboat that had been the Kaufman’s home for seven years, was scuttled by the rescuers to pre- vent it from becoming a hazard to naviga- tion.

NMMA cancels Strictly Sail Long Beach

LONG BEACH — The National Marine Manufacturers Association(NMMA) announced it is cancelling the Strictly Sail Long Beach show, scheduled for Oct. 23 to 26, and will be focusing on fewer shows in larger markets to better serve the boating industry, specifically on the West Coast. NMMA plans to concentrate its efforts

and resources on the Los Angeles, San Diego and San Francisco shows and expand these events to include a greater sailing presence. “The consensus is that there are too

many boat shows in California, and we are hopeful that this shift in focus to California’s largest boat shows will improve the sailing industry’s market

share and continue to help grow boating on the West Coast,” noted Thom Dammrich, NMMA president. To maintain the support the Long

Beach show has provided the Southern California sailing industry for 45 years, NMMA plans to add a new Sail Fest to the 2015 Progressive Insurance Los Angeles Boat Show. The L.A. Boat Show’s Marina del Rey location is the ideal venue for the in-water display of Sail Fest as well as edu- cational training opportunities for atten- dees.

Sailing accessories, small sailboats, seminars and features will be featured indoors at the L.A. Convention Center. Similar plans are being made for the Progressive Insurance San Diego International Boat Show and Progressive Insurance San Francisco Boat Show.

CSTR announces Guardian of the Reef fundraiser

SAN DIEGO — In December, California Ships to Reefs’ (CSTR) Board approved a new project for the San Diego Underwater Recreation Area (SDURA), the Guardian of the Reef/Reef Ball Project. This new reefing project would bring the 13-foot Guardian of the Reef bronze statue to the SDURA. Prior to reefing, this work of art will be publicly displayed in the harbor area while permits are being obtained. The display

location have yet to be determined. Fanning out from the Guardian along the seafloor, plans are to reef up to 1,000 reef balls over a 10-year period. Each reef ball is approximately 3 feet wide and 2 feet tall, weighing 750 pounds and config- ured with 14 holes each for the smallest of critters to hide from predators. A suitable site for this project has been

surveyed at the Northeast corner of the SDURA. The location is approximately 2- 1/2 miles northwest of the mouth of Mission Bay Harbor. The Guardian will rest in approximately 70-feet of water. CSTR is seeking donations to complete

this project with a goal of $200,000, to purchase the Guardian, reef balls and process permits required for the project. To purchase a replica, make a cash dona- tion for the project, visit californiaship- storeefs.org.
