EVERYTHING BOWLING, ALL THE TIME BELMO: The Perfect Dude
First time for everything: With his 2014 Senior U.S. Open victory, Norm Duke became the first player in PBA history to win both the U.S. Open and the Senior U.S. Open.
“Almost every bowler who has
succeeded on the PBA Tour is a condition champion,” Petraglia said. “They win when the conditions favor their game. But Norm can win on many different conditions because he is able to change his roll and hook; he doesn’t depend on the bowling balls to do that for him. “That’s not to say he doesn’t know
equipment. He does. But he’s able to not only change equipment, but also change how each ball reacts — and that makes him much more dangerous. He has been a student of the game his entire career.” In recent years, as the number of PBA
Tour events has decreased, Duke has become ever more focused on building
his legacy in the sport. To him, that means winning major championships. On the “regular” tour, he has said that the U.S. Open titles mean the most to him. Now, he has a Senior U.S. Open title as well. And there was no lack of satisfaction in his voice as he tried to describe how he felt about his latest legacy-enhancing triumph. “In a U.S. Open, you have to fight,”
he said. “It’s so mentally tiring, not to mention physically taxing. And even though this is a senior event, it’s still a U.S. Open, and it feels like it — a physical and mental grind.” He paused, then added: “It’s exactly what a U.S. Open should be.”
Tricks of the trade
The five “dudes” behind Dude Perfect, the sports-comedy You- tube channel that has garnered nearly 300 million views, took Professional Bowlers Association superstar, Jason Belmonte, out for a day of bowling at USA Bowling in Dallas, Texas. As always happens with the Dude Perfect team, things went awry in a hurry. Watch the video to see Belmonte perform an array of stunning trick shots, talk Australian with the Dude Perfect team, brandish his Lynyrd Skynyrd chops, and much more.
