Hardy grasses add structure and texture to perennial plantings. They are generally easy to maintain, requiring only an annual shearing before spring growth starts. Allow 2 to 3 years for them to grow to their full potential.

(P.P.12175)–The longest-blooming hardy geranium. From June until frost, Rozanne cranks out loads of 1½ inch to 2½ inch cup-shaped blooms of violet-blue with veined white centers. Deep green foliage is lightly marbled with chartreuse. The 18 inch tall plants spread up to 36 inches wide. Terrifi c for garden impact and superb in hang- ing baskets. Zones 5-9–A grass to light up shady spots. Mounds of wide, lemon to banana-yellow and green striped leaves are perfect highlights in the shade garden. 11971–(Calamagrostis acutifl ora ‘Karl Foerster’)–Zones 5-9–Remains upright and attractive. This non-invasive grass has an erect plant habit, forming tidy, compact clumps of deep green, lustrous foliage 24 to 36 inches high. Purplish 5 to 6 foot feathery infl orescences emerge in early summer, turning wheat-colored towards fall. Plant in any moist, well- drained soil. ❍

11997–(Schizachyrium scoparium ‘Prai- rie Blues’)–Zones 3-9–A striking native grass. Gray-blue spiky foliage turns red-orange in fall. In late summer, fl uffy silvery seedheads appear. A narrow, up- right habit makes it attractive in beds and borders. Hardy and tough, it thrives in hot, dry areas where other plants can- not survive. Grows 30 to 36 inches tall and up to 24 inches wide. Emerges late
