Match these Eastern Michigan University biologists, past and present, with organisms that have featured in their research:

Eastern | SPRING 2014 11

1-C Shillington studies the physiological and behavioral ecology of ectothermic organisms, especially tarantulas and other arachnids. 2-G Winning, named Distinguished Professor of the Year by the Presidents Council, State Universities of Michigan, studies how cellular interactions and cell signaling aff ect cell fate and cell behavior in amphibian embryos.

3-D Walker’s research concerns the ultrastructural aspects of cell diff erentiation. 4-E Greenwald is particularly interested in amphibians, as they can be important indicators of habitat degradation and environmental disturbances.

5-F Fennel brought us “T e Pig Watcher’s Guide to Biology” and other innovative teaching techniques before retiring in 1993. 6-A Jackson—an emeritus faculty member, like Fennel—is widely known for his work with desmids, an order of green algae. 7-B Kurta’s research includes monitoring hibernating populations for the arrival of white-nose syndrome.
