passes through the measuring cell inside a circulation system. A powerful, integrated ultrasonic probe dissolves any agglom- erates and ensures an effective dispersion. In most cases, external sample preparation is not required. The effort for measurements with the LA-950 is reduced to a minimum: the analysis process is largely automated; after the measurement, the system will rinse automatically. An analysis cycle includ- ing sample preparation, measurement, and cleaning usually takes only 1 minute, permitting a high sample throughput.

The required amount of liquid for wet measurements ranges from 180 to 250 ml; the actual sample volume usually amounts to only a few milliliters or milligrams. However, if there are very small amounts of sample, e.g. after grinding in a mixer mill MM 400, the required amount of liquid and sample can be further reduced. The optional MiniFlow module (Fig. 2) offers the entire comfort of the standard circulation unit, including auto-fill, ultrasound and independent rinsing func-

tion, but at a much lower liquid consumption of only 35 to 55 ml. For very small amounts of sample, the fraction cell is ideally suited for processing amounts of liquid from 7 to 15 ml. The fraction cell is manually filled and homoge- nizes the sample by means of a magnetic stirrer.

Conclusion

The laser scattering particle size analyzer LA-950 offers unique opportunities for the measurement of suspensions, emulsions and dry powders. Due to the extremely wide measuring range from 10 nm to 3 mm and the high sample throughput, grinding processes are comprehensively documented. Thanks to a wide array of different modules, the LA-950 is suitable for a huge variety of applications.
