As host of
Baycountyoutdoors.com, a website that provides blogs, reports, guides and video covering Florida’s Forgotten Coast, Cheryl Little covers a lot of water. But, as owner of Lawn Ranger landscaping service, she covers a lot of ground. “I mow 50 acres and edge over five miles each week,” she says, “I come home very dirty.” To wash off the day’s toil, Little hits the water. “The
properties that I manage are on prime fishing territory,” she explains, “so my kayak often comes with me to work.” Little has even used her lawn tractor to launch her Hobie Revolution.
For Little, her job and her hobby both play to her love of the outdoors. To get more time on the water, she suggests anglers fish any chance they get.
KAYAK OFTEN COMES WITH ME TO WORK
“I’ve fished in some pretty nasty conditions,” she admits, “you have to make use of every opportunity to get on the water—just go fishing.”
While Little is an avid boat angler, kayak fishing allows her to balance work and pleasure. “I throw the kayak in the water and get in a couple of hours of fishing,” she says. “With the boat I feel like I have to dedicate a whole
day.” One thing is common between her day job and side job; she takes every opportunity to spread her love of fishing the Forgotten Coast. “I’ve even convinced some of my landscaping clients to try kayak fishing.”

Chris Funk
DAY JOB: OPERATIONS TECHNICIAN AT POWER PLANT MOONLIGHTING: OUTDOOR PHOTOGRAPHER, WRITER, SPONSORED ANGLER
With a burly build, bushy chin and thick southern drawl, Chris Funk fits the description of a guy who works as a mechanic and engineer at a power plant. However, his rough and tough appearance conceals his talent as a photographer and writer. “I love being behind the lens and sharing the things I get to experience with others,” he says. When the folks at Jackson Kayak saw Funk’s photos, they signed him on as an official photographer. “I’ve had some incredible opportunities to travel and fish with real pros,” Funk says, “all because I love to take pictures.” Photography has taken Funk from the Florida Keys to White River in Arkansas and many hot spots in between. “It is awesome going from fishing the Atlantic to fishing the Gulf and so many other place.”
Shooting pictures for magazines and online outlets pushes Funk to explore his limits with the camera. The challenge of balancing light and composition is as enticing as the challenge of catching a fish. “The picture is my trophy,” he says, “when I see people’s reactions to my photos I know I’ve done my job.” Recently Funk has started writing about kayak fishing. “I always en- joyed creative writing,” he says, “so I’m reigniting the fire.” Funk encourages passionate kayak anglers to keep their priorities straight. He lectures up-and-comers to stay focused: “Don’t lose your job over fishing,” he stresses. Hard work has allowed him to follow a career he loves and chase his kayak fishing dreams. But kayak fishing is just one part of Funk’s diverse life. “My life revolves around six F’s: faith, family, fur, fins, feathers and fotography.”
