NATIONAL PARK SERVICE: Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail

Director’s Eddy Exploring the known

very time I go paddling I like the fact that the trip will never follow a predetermined path from A to B. Lake trips and coastal trips seemingly offer all compass points as potential

destinations. Even a known location offers an infinite number of variations in the trip and scenery so that every time you paddle, you are exploring. In 1773, John Ledyard carved himself a canoe and paddled away from Dartmouth College

down the Connecticut River. Little did he know his paddle would ultimately lead him to serve with Captain Cook and take him on adventures around the world. Later, Ledyard undertook a wild 1,200-mile walking journey across Russia and even ventured through Europe, Africa and China. At one point, Thomas Jefferson thought Ledyard was the most traveled person in the world…and it all started with a paddle trip. When the ACA originated in 1880, its mission revolved around two common themes,

camaraderie and exploration. Although those themes drive the undercurrent of today’s ACA, we are renewing our commitment to exploration by adding it to the list of ACA supported mission tenets, which include stewardship, education, recreation and competition. In the near future we will roll out new programs to support exploration. Please stay tuned and look for the Exploration tab on the ACA website soon. I hope you enjoy many opportunities to get out and explore this summer.

Captain John Smith, an epic small-boat explorer, covered 3,000 miles around Chesapeake Bay in an open 30-foot shal- lop. In the 1600s he and his crew mapped the Chesapeake Bay and its rivers with astonishing accuracy and with the help of Indians who described the lands and waterways beyond Smith’s experience.

Today, the Captain John Smith Chesa- peake National Historic Trail focuses on the ecology of Chesapeake Bay, and on American Indian tribes of the Chesapeake region, past and present.
