PETER MATHER When Peter isn’t in the field capturing photos of elusive wildlife and remote landscapes, he calls Whitehorse, Yukon, his home. The pro- fessional photographer is a fellow of the prestigious International League of Conservation Photography and co-author of guidebook, Paddling in the Yukon. His wild adventures led to becoming a conser- vationist. “For me, the Peel Watershed best represents the wilder- ness of the Yukon,” he says. Discover Peter’s photos of this paddler’s paradise—and his attempt to protect it—on page 42.

WALLY SCHABER After 40 busy years in the outdoor business, first establishing out- fitter Black Feather Wilderness Adventures in 1971 and then out- door retailer Trailhead in 1976, Wally is now pursuing his dream river trips. A fellow of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society and a keen student of geography and history, he’s combining his pas- sions in an upcoming book that traces the history of the Dumoine River watershed. Wally shares a small slice of canoe history lore in “Ghosts of the North” on page 20.

JEN JOHNSON Jen has logged countless backcountry hours paddling, portaging and hiking in pursuit of the perfect family adventure. A mom of two boys, she finds the biggest challenge of tripping with her kids is “selecting a route that they will find challenging, one that pushes their limits, but not so difficult that it burns them out.” Join Jen on her family’s biggest challenge yet—a rugged and remote multi- day hike—on page 38.

KAYDI PYETTE As Canoeroots’ managing editor, Kaydi especially enjoyed the time spent by the campfire perfecting, photographing and then eating the ultimate backcountry pizzas baked for the photo on page 28. In this issue, she also sorts through the best new camp innovations on page 48, and takes Mad River Canoe’s Serenade (page 31) and Nova Craft’s Bob Special (page 32) out for a spin.
