connection to Harrison (“The local train is behind us!”). As time went on, I noticed that more often

than not, the bar car would be missing from the consist. Sometimes the bar car would be there, but the bartender would not. The first of the new M-8 railcars went into service in March 2011. As more and more M-8’s were accepted, the “worst” of the M-2 fleet was re- tired. The bar cars hung on for as long as they could, but the rumors began to swell as 2012 turned into 2013. The latest informa- tion from CDOT claimed there might not be a budget for bar cars (which they now insist on calling “Café Cars”). Some called for less bar space and more traditional seating, oth- er designs called for nothing more than a small galley in one corner of what would oth- erwise be a coach. A vocal few are campaign- ing for no bar car service at all. As Kawasaki nears completion of the 400-plus car order, the future of bar cars seems uncertain at best. Some say there is no place for the bar car in a modern commute, its a vulgar tradi- tion more suited to the Mad Men era, yet others say it adds a special human spirit to an otherwise drab and dreary rat race. I was working for a small ad agency during my time on the New Haven Line, and on some evenings the comparisons to Don Draper and his friends were fair. Sadly, I never did get to ride a bar car the

entire 72 miles from Grand Central Termi- nal to New Haven, Conn. However, I feel lucky to have grown up with a railroad that held on to so many old traditions such as equipping outlying ticket agents with val- idator stamps, or running some of the last cab units in regular service. Merle Haggard’s Boxcar Not only is Merle Haggard proud to be an Okie From Muskogee, but he’s also a proud railfan and model railroader. A lot of that was influenced by where he grew up — along the Santa Fe tracks in Oildale, Calif., on the fringes of Bakersfield. The line that is still used by oil tank trains passed within a few feet of the Haggard home, and it’s influ- ence can be heard in the song “Oil Tanker Train” on Merle’s latest album Working In Tennessee. In that song, Merle relates the joy he felt when his father bought him a model oil train for Christmas. Not only did Haggard live near the tracks,

but his house was actually a converted re- frigerator car that his father, James, rebuilt into a house during the depression. He added a pop-out dining area and other mod- ifications have been made throughout the years. Today, the house sits under a tangle of vines, although still occupied. A timely article in the New York Times on

February 24, 2014, documented the history of Hag’s home, coming out just before I head- ed west to California for Winterail. Since I was heading from Los Angeles up to Stock- ton via the Central Valley, a stop in Oildale became a priority. While the Times article didn’t give the exact location of the house, an internet search did give an approximate in- tersection, and using that and the tracks as
