Monon Railroad

When was the last time your organization

took a hard look at how you interpret your museum to the public? Imagine you are see- ing your collection through the eyes of a first-time visitor with no railroading experi- ence. Does your museum tour have a clear start and finish that anyone can follow? If there was no one around to explain and in- terpret, would someone understand what it was they saw? Some people come to visit and they tune

out the tour guide, or decide to just look around on their own. This is where the in- stallation of good signage and markers can help. A sign that is packed with rows and rows of tiny text that explains every point in detail will be ignored. A good suggestion is to explain what the item is and why you have it on display. For example, “This is a mile- post from the Podunk & Northern from Po- dunk Heights, measuring 26 miles from the terminal at Podunk City. This marker was saved when the line was ripped up in 1972.” What if visitors have questions about the history of the Podunk & Northern? That is excellent follow-up information that can be provided by a friendly tour guide, or pub- lished on your museum’s web site (More on that topic in a future edition). Don’t be afraid to borrow some ideas from

some of the organizations that have been do- ing this successfully for a while. Think of your last visit to the Smithsonian (or any other history museum) — what made your visit special? Was it the large, graphic dis- plays? Was it how they put spotlights on cer- tain artifacts? Was it the room you had to walk around and make discoveries on your own? Many railroad museums across the country do not have budgets or display halls the size of the Smithsonian, yet we can still use many of their concepts to help our visi- tors understand the rich railroad heritage we are trying to preserve. First and fore- most, keep down the clutter! What’s more ef- fective, stuffing a showcase full of 20 kerosene lanterns, or showing off just three or four examples with descriptions? What’s more engaging, a wall filled with tiny 5×7

I organize and guide tours to the great railroad lines of Switzerland. Enjoy the famous Gotthard Railroad (SBB) or the scenic Furka Steam Railroad (DFB)! But I also show you the unknown railroads, like the beau- tiful Jura Railroad (CJ) or the narrow gauged Walden- burg Railroad (WB). Whatever you would like to discover, I take care to make it happen. I ride with you in the trains and inform you about the historical, technical and cultural aspects of the area. I drive you to the best photo spots along the track by car. I take care of tickets, food, lodging and souvenirs.
