I have many photographs of Denver & Rio Grande Western F9A 5771 in the “one black stripe” and Rio Grande Gold livery in use when it powered the Rio Grande Zephyr in the 1970s and ‘80s. But the Colorado Railroad Museum’s restoration of 5771 brought the opportunity to get photos of my favorite locomotive in its previous “four black stripe” scheme used in its pre-Zephyr period.
out a warning, but they did not hear me. For- tunately they got off the tracks in time, but it could easily have been a disaster. Train crews and passengers are also at a
risk if the train is thrown into emergency to try to avoid hitting someone on the tracks. Entering tunnels or walking across trestles may put you in a place with nowhere to go to escape a train. And standing beside the tracks with a passing train after taking your photo can put you in danger of getting hit by shifted cargo or a sudden derailment. We have all heard about railfans’ experi-
ences along the Northeast Corridor in the first few years after 9/11 where even photog- raphy from a waiting platform could intro- duce you to aggressive transit police or secu- rity. Railfans have been made to leave, been ticketed or arrested under the guise of sev- eral reasons, including rules against plat- form photography or not having ID (thank- fully, this has largely died down). Some popular railfan areas even have “No Park- ing” signs along public roads to discourage photography from the roadside. Years ago at Plain siding on the Union Pacific’s Moffat Line west of Denver, UP put up its own no parking signs where one could formerly park off railroad property. It should go without saying that taking
builder plates or other “souvenirs” is plain stealing, even if the locomotive is in the scrap line. And if a friend gives you such an item, you, too, are liable for any criminal charges. If you were to climb on a locomotive or freight car for photos from a different viewpoint (yes, railfans have done this) and unintentionally set a locomotive or car in motion causing an accident, felony and civil charges could be filed for property damage, arson if a fire results, and injury or even manslaughter or homicide charges if some- one, including responding emergency per- sonnel, is injured or killed. And realize that
any photos taken from railroad property, if published or placed on the web, can be used as evidence of trespassing. Some railroads have taken a positive re-
sponse to railfans by issuing railroad pho- tography passes for waiting platforms, or setting up safe areas for watching and pho- tographing trains. Horseshoe Curve in Pennsylvania; Rochelle, Ill.; Jesup, Folkston and Manchester, Ga.; Plant City, Fla.; Flato- nia, Texas; Deshler, Ohio; Winslow, Ariz.; and Gorham, Ill., are just a few locations found on a quick internet search that have railroad viewing areas set up. You are pretty much limited to the same composition time after time, but you may be able to come up with a creative use of lenses or use changing light or weather conditions to capture a different photo.
Legally, we cannot use our railfan photos
for advertising or other commercial purpos- es without written authorization. But typi- cal railfan use, including image shows, a web site or blog, or publication in a magazine or book is not commercial use. Just be sure you are taking your photos from public property or have permission to be on railroad property.
The Good Railroad museums, especially those with outside displays of historic locomotives and rolling stock, are definitely good for railfan photography as they allow you photographs of subjects you would otherwise never see. And museums that schedule actual steam operations on their grounds are better yet. Another good aspect is a really fun part of
railfan photography. You never know when you might come across a humorous or un- usual sight, such as an engineer who held his stuffed Tigger doll out the window for me recently as his train passed, or humorous graffiti on the sides of passing rail cars, or odd ball locomotives and rail equipment, or . . .
