Moving into the mainstream

M

obile World Congress has been and gone with this year’s theme being ‘Creating What’s Next’, although a lot of the announcements felt pretty familiar.

The Internet of Things, 5G, wearables, VoLTE and the connected home all featured heavily but there wasn’t one clear headline-grabbing announcement this year.

What was clear though, was that LTE has definitely moved into the mainstream. Technologies that in the past have caused much theoretical debate are now being put in to practice on a large scale and companies were lining up to demonstrate their solutions.

There was plenty of connected car technology on show and much talk about how CSPs can make the most of the opportunities out there. In this issue, Alun Lewis delves deeper into the debate, asking how some of the sector’s complex problems can be resolved (page 10).

As usual, a large part of the show was devoted to new devices. As a result, we have focused on the challenge of antennas as LTE has offered another set of complicated questions for designers to answer. Tim Guest asks some industry experts for their views on page 26.

We have also sought the opinion of telecoms expert Alan Quayle, a veteran in the exhibition halls of Barcelona. He offered some interesting views on the direction the show is taking, urging the GSMA to go back to basics and focus on the real issues facing CSPs today (page 36). LTE
