MANAGEMENT IN AVIATION HISTORY BENCH MARKS
This bronze plaque was donated by Thompson’s fellow Early Birds to the citizens of Washington, Pennsylvania. In order to qualify as a member of this organization an aviator must have soloed prior to December 17, 1916. Thompson preferred biplanes to monoplanes which is evident in the design of this lavish tribute. I have not been able to confi rm all of the statistics quoted here by the Early Birds.
The lower inscription reads as follows: IN MEMORY OF
DELLOYD (DUTCH) THOMPSON
SECOND AVIATOR IN UNITED STATES TO LOOP AN AIRPLANE
HOLDER OF WORLD’S ALTITUDE RECORD FOR MANY YEARS A
WARDED SPEED RECORD FOR AIRPLANES IN 1916 BOMBED NATIONAL CAPITAL IN 1916 TO SHOW NEED FOR AERIAL PREPAREDNESS
