“We hope to launch the database this summer. Once that occurs, we’re talking about integrating DocbookMD into the database as the communication plat- form. The physicians, audiologists, and other health professionals who use it will be able to efficiently and securely communicate with one another on the details of each patient’s care,” he said.

MGMA: ICD-10 readiness lags

Free DocbookMD update available

Version 5.3 of the Texas Medical Asso- ciation’s endorsed, secure communica- tion app DocbookMD is now available free in the Apple App Store, http://bit .ly/1iRZ0pL, and on Google Play, http:// bit.ly/1fZxJSl. Version 5.3 now stores your “Favorites” in the DocbookMD cloud, synced with any device you log into and persistent when uninstalling or upgrading the app.

In many situations, texting is the fast- est and most efficient way to send infor- mation, and reports show that texting among physicians is widespread and that physicians are texting clinical infor- mation. Physicians who text each other clinical information risk exposing them- selves to HIPAA privacy and security vio- lations, but DocbookMD’s HIPAA-secure framework mitigates that risk. DocbookMD is a free benefit of your TMA membership that you can start tak- ing advantage of immediately. County and state medical societies across the country offer DocbookMD as a free ben- efit, and more than 23,000 physicians in 39 states are using the app. To begin using DocbookMD, down- load the app from www.texmed.org/ docbookmd to your smartphone or tab- let, and follow the registration instruc- tions. For more information or help reg- istering, contact the TMA Knowledge Center by email, knowlege@texmed.org, or by calling (800) 880-7955. Be sure to view online video tutorials, http:// docbookmd.com/videos, on how to use DocbookMD.

As the Oct. 1 compliance date to transi- tion to ICD-10 approaches for physician practices, Medical Group Management Association (MGMA) research indicates overall readiness for implementation continues to lag. Legislative and Execu- tive Advocacy Response Network (LEARN) ICD-10 Implementation Study, January 2014 reports less than 10 percent of responding practices had made signifi- cant progress when rating their overall readiness for ICD-10 implementation. That figure is up only slightly (from 4.7 percent) since June, when MGMA previ- ously conducted research to assess readi- ness levels. To download the report, visit http://bit.ly/1eKev4v. The new research includes responses

from more than 21,000 physicians in more than 570 medical groups. “The critical coordination that must

take place between practices and their software vendor, clearinghouse, and health plan partners is simply not hap- pening at the pace required for a seam- less implementation. Very simply, ICD- 10 is behind schedule,” said Susan L. Turney, MD, MGMA president and chief executive officer. “MGMA continues to advocate on behalf of members and pro- vide tools and resources to help practice executives make the transition to ICD-10 more cost effective and less disruptive to their organizations.” MGMA research also revealed:

• Software upgrades or replacements are necessary. More than 80 per- cent of respondents indicated that their practice management software would require replacement or upgrad- ing to accommodate ICD-10 diagno- sis codes. Significant software costs will be absorbed by practices. Just 41 percent of respondents reported their cost to upgrade or replace their prac- tice management system software will be covered by their vendor. For those required to cover these soft-
