Malcolm Brenner, MD, director of the Center for Cell and Gene Therapy at Baylor College of Medicine, Texas Children’s Hos- pital, and Houston Methodist Hospital, received the Pediatric Blood and Marrow Transplant Consortium’s Lifetime Achieve- ment Award. The consortium’s mission is “to support research and education to improve the availability, safety, and efficacy of hematopoietic cell transplantation and other cellular therapeu- tics for children and adolescents.”


Baylor College of Medicine named Donald T. Donovan, MD, the Olga Keith Wiess Professor and Chair of the Bobby R. Alford Department of Otolaryngology — Head and Neck Surgery. Dr. Donovan had been the department’s interim chair since 2010.

Gov. Rick Perry named Antonio Falcon, MD, of Rio Grande City, to the Health and Human Services Council, which helps develop policies and rules for the Texas Health and Human Services Commission and makes recommendations regarding manage- ment and operations. Dr. Falcon is a family physician and the medical director of Family Health Center in Rio Grande City.


Gov. Rick Perry appointed Thomas Feeley, MD, of Houston, to the Texas Institute for Health Care Quality and Efficiency Board of Directors. The institute works to improve health care quality, accountability, education, and cost to the state by encourag- ing collaboration with health professionals, effective delivery models, and coordination of health care services. Dr. Feeley is head of the Institute of Cancer Care Innovation at MD Anderson Cancer Center.


The University of Houston Law Center presented Adan Rios, MD, with an Arrival Award, which recognizes immigrants’ out- standing achievements. Dr. Rios, a general oncologist, is an as- sociate professor of internal medicine at The University of Texas Medical School at Houston. He is internationally renowned for his work in HIV-associated malignancies and the treatment of tumors with biological response modifiers. He patented a methodology for the development of a preventive HIV vaccine, which he continues to pursue.
