MILK POWDER PARTNER Irish milk powder producer North Cork Co- Op Creameries has recently ordered a new automatic palletiser for its production plant at Kanturk, Co. Cork, Ireland. Premier Tech Chronos will be supplying a GPL 250 Series Palletiser to palletise bags of milk powder at rates of up to 250 bags per hour. “We have worked very closely with Premier Tech Chronos whilst selecting this particular type of palletising system,” commented Roger McCarthy, manager,

Honey Pot Grain (Lincolnshire, UK), a centralised grain handling facility owned by the Openfi eld Group, has upgraded to a new Silo Sweep Auger from Guttridge to improve the effi ciency of its operations. A quick and painless installation has been followed by successful adoption, and Honey Pot Grain is now reaping the rewards of reliable silo emptying, an essential element of its day-to-day processes.
“Our original sweep auger was installed in the mid 1970s,” said Mr Simon Schaanning, store operations manager for Honey Pot Grain. “Its reliability had become problematic and so we assessed the options for replacement. The Guttridge Silo Sweep Auger has recently come to market and is a strong, robust design. We’ve had good experience of Guttridge equipment elsewhere on the site and for us, a UK build and local support were major pluses. Guttridge effi ciently installed the replacement sweep auger which has now proven its performance over several silo emptying operations.”

The manufacturer has calculated that the payback on investing in a yardramp (whether it is bought or rented) can be achieved within a year – or sooner, depending on the frequency of deliveries from overseas. In today’s global market, many companies source supplies, components or products from overseas, yet not every fi rm has the capability to unload a shipping container. “Without a dedicated loading bay, many small-to-medium- sized companies opt to have goods transferred from a rigid container to a curtain-sided trailer for unloading,” explains John Meale, managing
director of Thorworld Industries. As a result, ports offer a reloading
service where goods are taken off the inbound container and transferred to a suitable trailer more appropriate for fi nal delivery. However, as Thorworld points out, there is a substantial cost every time this occurs, with prices around the £450 mark per delivery. “How many oversea deliveries will a company take in a year?” ponders John Meale, managing director of Thorworld Industries. “Even if it is only once per month, the cost is £5,400. In addition to cost considerations, it is also a hugely ineffi cient and time-consuming process, risking damage to goods and stalling a trailer that could be on the road
