F1With BBC SpoilingThe Effect Tony Jardine
"I worked with him when I used to do the guide commentaries for the BBC. He has these amazing, meticulous notes. He does all his homework where he has drivers' best results, their worst results, all the histories of the drivers and he tapes them all over the walls of the commentarybox. "When I was doing the guide commentaries from Canada, or the States or South
Africa, he would be in the studio in
London. So, I would do the build-up and give him all the information live during the race to feed back to the studio and he and James would always pretend to be in Canada or wherever. James Hunt hated it and every time Murray would say, 'Here we are in Canada…', literally 10 minutes later James would go, 'From the window of my BBC commentary hut here at White City…' He would always give the game away and Murray would be crestfallen by this. James would do it to him every time, every time!”

I should imagine that the conditions in the cockpit are unimaginable!
"In 1985, we started to become truly aware of what a sensational driver Ayrton Senna was. In his previous debut year, he had worked wonders in the tardy Toleman, nearly winning the Monaco Grand Prix, but
now, driving for Lotus in a superior car, he won his first two Grands Prix against the likes of Alain Prost, Nigel Mansell and Nelson Piquet." (Chris Willows)
"I knew better than to take offence at some of the well- meant barbs that were fired atmebut was deeply hurt by one Barry Foley caricature for Autosport about which I moaned to the publishers. For Barry's amusing response, see left.”
FoolingThe Public… Jim Reside
"The early Grand Prix races (when the BBC first covered them) were run on a tight budget. We used to only commentate on the European races from the track. The races in Canada, Japan and Australia were all done by Murray in abroomcupboard in theTelevision Centre. "Murray used to famously says things like, 'I can't
actually see the final corner from my commentary position…'We used to raise our eyebrows and worry that someone would find out that the reason for that was that he was in a broom cupboard in Shepherd's Bush! So, though we didn't actually say we were there, we hinted we were there.”
