F1With BBC HuntThe Hedonist Mike Doodson

"He [James Hunt] still had a close relationship with the Marlboro people, some of whom shared his hard-partying enthusiasm, and he stayed in the same hotels as them. They were known as 'FOFA' (Formula One Fun Association). If only half of what we heard about their activities was true, then they must have been living life very hard. James was so decadent that his capacity to shock wore off quite quickly.”

"I always stood up to do my commentaries. James Hunt, alongside me, always sat down. Asource ofnon-stop friction.”

Murray's Idiosyncrasies Jackie Stewart

"Of course he stands up all the time. That hasn't changed in all the years that have passed. He is still a very fit man, a remarkably fitmanfor his age. "The energy that he produces on the mic is quite extraordinary. He is never standing flat

footed, he is always on the edge of everything. I always went in and sat down in the normal way, as one does. Inmytime with ABC's

WideWorld of Sport, all the commentators sat. "Then of course he also liked to use a lip mic. which is the old-fashioned, very heavy cabled

mic with a sort of metal frame around it which almost fitted on to your lip, your top lip. With the modernmedical problems that go round the world, that was something that everybody looked at rather suspiciously! But that was his first love, and of course he always had a strong delivery, and with a mic glued to your upper lip you never turned your head away from the mic so you never lost themomentumof an explanation or a move. "His abilities were many, and so were his errors! (much laughter) But never to a point where

anybody would ever be either insulted and angry. It was 'doing a Murray' in quotes. It was always quite amusing to be the other part of the commentary team!”

"The BBC were always worried that if you gave two egotistical commentators a microphone each they would be talking over each other. The only way to stop this was to give them one microphone and let them fight over it, which is what James and I did. I always used to stand up to do my commentaries, because I was very excited. It is a lot easier to commentate standing up rather than sitting, because when you sit down your shoulders go forward, and your chest is deflated. When you stand up your shoulders go back, and your chest is inflated and you can project your voice better.Psychologically you feel much freer. The dilemma formyco-commentator was what does he do. James always used to sit in a sort of scrunchedupheap, languidly waving his hand if he wanted the microphone.”
