F1With BBC A Happy Gift MurrayWalker

PP: "Did you ever, ever dry?" "No. There is no such thing as a dull F1 race. There are processional F1 races

but that doesn't mean they are dull because there is always drama and excitement and something worth drawing attention to if you look hard enough and know enough about it and are interested enough in finding it. I am naturally eloquent in that sort of situation and I was always bubbling with enthusiasm to tell everybody about this wonderful thing that was happening and why it was affecting me so muchandwhyI wanted it to affect them so much. No, I never dried up.”

"In 1976, after he had become a double World Champion, for Lotus and McLaren, Emerson Fittipaldi was no longer a leading contender in Formula One, having courageously but inadvisedly decided, with his brother, Wilson, to build their own Formula One car, the Copersucar in Brazil. Emerson and I chat in the pit lane at Monaco, 1978, in its old location after the Gasworks Hairpin. An amazing 28 years later, we were to chat again in the pit lane as driver and commentator during the 2006 Grand Prix Masters series.”

…and I interrupt myself to bring you this...

"1979 was the first year in which the BBC covered all the races and at Monaco to celebrate the occasion was my BBC boss and mentor, Jonathan Martin, to whom I owe so much. Pity about the shirts! Jonathan deservedly went on to become BBC TV's Head of Sport and I was to be happily responsible to him until my switch to ITV in 1997 when the BBC lost the franchise.”

PP: “Do you have any recollection of what it was like commentating with Graham Hill, which you didonone occasion?" "I can remember it was at Silverstone. Graham Hill was in the box with me, and

Colin Chapman. I think it must have been the British Grand Prix, from which he had presumably retired. He was interjecting with comments. I do remember that, whenwefinished, he said, 'Blimey, it's not as easy as I thought it was'.”
