and configure using Drive composer Pro, the common PC tool for the ACS880 drive series. Using the safety module, the customer gets straightforward functionality right in the drive and does not need to figure out how he is going to hook up and wire the logic with relays, resets and contactors. Instead the customer makes them work in harmony with the drive’s functionality by simply commissioning these functions that are built-in the module based on the safety design. Five safety functions in one safety module
The optional TÜV-certified safety functions module (FSO-11) works seamlessly with the all-compatible ACS880 industrial drives. It offers five optional safety functions in a compact ‘safety-yellow’ colored module package. The functions are: Safe stop 1 (SS1), Safe stop emergency (SSE), Safe brake control (SBC), Safely-limited speed (SLS) and Safe maximum speed (SMS). The safety functions module is easy to commission

System-wide approach
The safety functions module is easy to connect to a safety PLC, such as ABB’s AC500-S. This makes it possible to build a larger safety system where the safety PLC controls several drives, and the safety modules provide the local safety functionality and feedback to and from each drive. Connection between drive and PLC is done using a safety fieldbus built on PROFIsafe protocol. ABB also offers a wide variety of additional safety devices such as switches, contactors and relays. ●

Drives cut fume extraction costs at melting shop A
fume extraction system at a steel works is saving £570,000 a year on energy costs thanks
to the installation of variable-speed drives and motors by ABB. The contract involved the supply of
services and solutions from across the ABB group, as well as co-ordination with a number of other subcontractors. Tata Steel’s Aldwarke melting shop,

in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, UK, produces 750,000 tonnes of steel a year. The main extraction system of the machine shop was identified by the company as being an area where significant savings could be made. This consists of five main extraction fans, which draw the fumes from the shop via a system of dampers and vanes. These fumes are then sent to the bag filter
plant for removal of dust particles. ABB supplied a complete solution
for the melting shop. This included the supply and installation of five 690V regenerative drives with active frnt-end supply units, as well as five 1200kW, 6-pole, air-cooled motors.
