Pins offer alternative to screws N
ew microPEM TackSert pins are a fastener solution to attach top
panels securely to a base panel or chassis in compact electronic assemblies. These pins provide practical alternatives to micro screws by eliminating the typically costly issues associated with threaded hardware (including inserts, tapping, cross threading, torque control, and vibration back out). They will attach top panels (of any material as thin as 0.2mm/.008-in) to base panels or chassis manufactured from common magnesium die-cast materials (such as AZ91D) or plastics (such as ABS). Their diagonal knurl effectively holds
the top panel to a base panel or chassis by broaching into the base panel/
applying sufficient squeezing force using punch and anvil until the head of the pin contacts the top sheet. During the process, the
fastener’s tapered tip assists in location and a firm interference fit eliminates hole-tolerance issues. Pins can be installed automatically for high-volume applications. Designers can specify Type
chassis using a simple press-in action without heat or ultrasonics. TackSert (Type TK) pins install
quickly and easily by preparing properly sized mounting holes in the top sheet and base panel, placing the pin through the hole in the top sheet and into the mounting hole of the base panel, and
Dual purpose fastener G
ESIPA Blind Riveting Systems Ltd was approached to fulfil a
standard fastening requirement but they finally ended up delivering a novel solution, which performed a dual role for this OEM application. The original need was for a
fastener to assemble an aluminium extrusion to the vehicle. Evidently, another fastener was already being used by the customer, to clamp the spacer to this aluminium extrusion. After analysing the customer requirement, GESIPA suggested a single part replacement solution in the form of its rivet nut stud fulfilling both the fastening needs at the same time.
“The solution delivered by
GESIPA was a specially designed M6 rivet nut stud manufactured in Steel with 5.8mm grip range. This rivet nut stud was used to clamp the spacer to the extrusion simultaneously assembling the extrusion to the vehicle thus serving the dual purpose and replacing the

need of using two distinct fasteners in the same application,” explains Stephen Dovernor, Account Manager, Technical Sales, GESIPA, UK. The solution developed by
GESIPA was able to provide the customer with a single fastener replacing two currently used, at a lower in-place cost. Also, stronger clamp force and higher load bearing capacity of the fastener provided a guaranteed and secure joint. The bespoke rivet nut stud manufactured by GESIPA as a solution to the automotive application requirement, not only provided an easier, neater and quicker installation option to assemble the extrusion to the vehicle itself but was also simultaneously used to clamp the spacer to this aluminium extrusion, thus serving the dual purpose. Total production and installation
times are reduced by approximately 50 per cent. ●

Low-temperature conductive adhesive
E
ngineered Material Systems, a supplier of electronic materials for circuit assembly
applications, has introduced the CA-180 Low Temperature Cure/Snap Cure Conductive Adhesive designed for die-attach applications in smart cards, circuit assembly, photonics or camera modules. ECM CA-180 will cure in 30
minutes at 80°C or in seconds at 200°C, and has a moderate glass transition temperature (Tg) and modulus. CA-180 has an optimised rheology for needle dispensing by time-pressure, auger or positive displacement. Unlike most conductive adhesives, CA-180 develops excellent conductivity with short, low-temperature cures. After curing for 30 minutes at 80°C, its electrical conductivity is 0.00006ohm-cm. ●
