2 female presidents As of July 1, four of the 26 ELCA college presidents will be women. Elected in February, Rebecca M. Bergman and Paula J. Carlson will


serve Gustavus Adolphus College, St. Peter, Minn., and Luther College, Decorah, Iowa, respectively—the first women presidents for both schools. They join presidents Janet Morgan Riggs of Gettysburg (Pa.) College and Laurie M. Joyner of Wittenberg Uni- versity, Springfield, Ohio. Bergman, a Gustavus Adolphus board member and vice president of research, tech- nology and therapy delivery systems at Medtronic Inc., succeeds Jack R. Ohle, who is retiring. Carlson, vice president for mission at St. Olaf Col- lege, Northfield, Minn., and a scholar of medieval and modern American literature, succeeds interim president David Tiede.


Colorado flooding


Lutheran Disaster Response contin- ues long-term recovery work after flooding and mudslides damaged and destroyed more than 18,000 homes and businesses in Colo- rado in September. LDR is working through Lutheran Family Services Rocky Mountains, which is hiring case managers to help people affected by the floods. Megan Brandsrud of LDR said requesting aid can be over- whelming for some people, especially if English isn’t their first language. Funds are also being used to provide spiritual and emotional care.

His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama celebrates Losar (Tibetan New Year) at Augsburg College, Minneapolis. A day earlier, the 1989 Nobel Peace Prize winner delivered a March 1 keynote address at the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize Forum in Minneapolis. The spiritual leader of the Gelug School of Tibetan Buddhism also blessed Augsburg sophomore Tenzin Yeshi Paichang (inset), who served as his student attaché. When Paichang was 2 years old, he played the young Dalai Lama in Kundun, a film by Martin Scorcese. Augsburg President Paul Pribbenow said the college is committed to “educating informed global citizens and to embracing the links between faith and learning.”
