NURSERYindustry Furniture Furniture fit for a king

There’s nothing an expectant mum enjoys more than designing a room for her baby. Creating a dream nursery takes time and consideration, not just about style, but also safety and space. After all, baby’s room is often so tiny it can be a struggle to squeeze everything in.

The safest place for a baby to sleep for the first six months is in a separate bed in his parent’s room, according to the Lullaby Trust. But there are real benefits to getting the nursery ready early as not only is it somewhere to keep his things, it is somewhere to change and dress him and eventually somewhere for him to play. He will come to know it as his own special place and by the time he moves in, the familiarity will be comforting.

Room displays are an excellent way to showcase an entire range of furniture which can then be beautifully dressed with bedding and accessories. Once a customer’s attention is caught, a brief consultation should be offered to assess individual needs, tastes and limitations such as affordability and space.

which have fun themes - to help with the transition to a single bed.

When selecting stock it is worth bearing in mind a Which? survey. More than 500 cot

The furniture required will depend on the age and size of the baby. For a newborn, a moses basket on a stand is cosy and convenient. It can sit neatly next to mum and dad’s bed in the early months and is both lightweight and portable. However, babies outgrow them quickly, normally by three or four months.

Many furniture ranges also offer chests, shelves, bedside tables and toy boxes but whether these are needed will be determined by budget and space.

After a moses basket or crib, the baby will need a cot. Some parents like to use one from birth but if so, they should check the dimensions to ensure it will fit in their room. Fixed rails offer security but most cots have drop rails to make lifting baby in and out easier. An adjustable base is an attractive feature, especially if the cot is to be used when the baby is very young. But once a baby can pull itself up, parents should be advised to adjust the base to its lowest position for safety reasons. Some cots have a teething rail to prevent the baby from damaging the wood when those little teeth start to cut through. A cot with removable sides that transforms into a junior bed is a solution that can last for years but some parents like the idea of a toddler bed - many of

owners and 600 cot bed owners were asked what their most important considerations were when buying. The cot owners’ top five requirements were: safety; price; whether the cot could be converted into a toddler bed; a drop side, and durability. Cotbed owners said: safety; price; ease of converting into a toddler bed; durability, and ease of using a height adjustable base. Parents may also need advice on selecting a mattress. The Lullaby Trust recommends a firm, flat mattress with a waterproof layer which can be wiped down and kept clean to avoid bacteria collecting in the foam. A nursery wardrobe is often next on the shopping list. It is a good idea to stock a variety - some parents will be looking for a large wardrobe whereas others will be limited by a small space and need something slim.

Drawers or shelves in the wardrobe are attractive features. Many furniture ranges also offer chests, shelves, bedside tables and toy boxes but whether these are needed will be determined by budget and space. Retailers can make furniture dimensions available and advise parents to mark out the space with tape taking care not to place a cot next to a window or a radiator if possible.

Most parents like to change their little one at a convenient height and changing tables are perfect for this but for smaller rooms, a cot top changer or dresser / changer are good alternatives.

Once the furniture has been selected, the fun can begin and mum and dad can choose from the vast array of attractive bedding and accessories to compliment their order.
