Developmental Program head coach Don Showalter (Iowa City High School) was named on June 21 the 2012 United States Olympic
Committee's (USOC) Volunteer Coach of the Year. Showalter was recognized at the USOC Coach of the Year Awards Reception that took place as part of the 2013 National Coaching Conference in Colorado Springs, Colo.
“We're extremely proud that the
USOC has selected Coach Showalter as the USOC Volunteer Coach of the Year,” said USA Basketball CEO Jim Tooley. “Don has tirelessly undertaken head coaching responsibilities of the USA Basketball Developmental National Team program since 2009. In those five years, he not only has directed USA U16 and U17 teams to a combined 31-0 record in international competitions while winning two FIBA U17 World Championships (2012 and 2010) and three FIBA Americas U16 Championships (2013, 2011 and 2009), but he has helped establish conti- nuity in the program and helped develop character in our National Development program players.”
In 2012, his fourth year at the helm of
the USA Basketball Men’s Developmental National Team, Showalter led the U.S. to the gold medal on the strength of an 8-0 record at the 2012 International Basketball Federation (FIBA) U17 World Championship. The win marked the fourth gold medal in as many summers for Showalter, who also led the U.S. to an undefeated run for the 2011 FIBA Americas U16 Championship title.
For his efforts in 2012, Showalter
earned his fourth-straight USA Basketball Developmental Coach of the Year award. One of the nation’s most accomplished high school coaches, Showalter completed his 38th season with a 562-294 overall record (.657
16
winning percentage) and 16 district titles through the 2011-12 campaign. The following season, he took over as head coach at Iowa City High School, where he is currently rebuilding the program.
Showalter, who was honored by the
USOC for his contributions through 2012, most recently again led the USA to a gold medal showing at the 2013 FIBA Americas U16 Championship in Uruguay. Finishing a perfect 5-0,
Showalter's 2013 U16 team averaged 106.8 points per game and posted a massive 53.4 points per game average margin of victory. “We are honored to recognize the
tireless service and achievements of these five coaches, who have dedicated their lives to helping countless athletes reach their highest athletic and personal potential,” said Alan Ashley, USOC chief of sport performance.
